BuddyPress Project Roadmap
June 16, 2009 in Community, News
The votes are in, tallied, and the BuddyPress roadmap is now complete, ready for all to see. Thank you to everyone who gave their input.
The roadmap should give everyone a good idea of what they should expect to see in the next four versions of BuddyPress. You will also see both the status updates and albums components show up within these versions.
I really want to encourage developers to get involved with the project. If you’re a developer and would like to see some of these features (in v1.2+) appear sooner, here’s your chance to help make a big difference.
Group creation is now open on this site, why not pick a feature you’d be interested in working on and create a group for it? By doing this you’ll encourage other BuddyPress developers to join in, discuss the feature and give feedback. I’ll be more than happy to take a look at plugins that add roadmap features and consider them for inclusion in the core of BuddyPress. You may even end up as a core committer.
If you’re interested in development, you should also be spending time in the #buddypress-dev IRC room on Freenode (don’t rely on the Java client though). We frequently have BuddyPress development and plugin discussions in there.
If you have any specific questions, please feel free to DM me or comment on this post, I’ll do my best to answer.

“You will also see both the status updates and albums components show up within these versions.”
When does that mean?
SlaFFik said on June 16, 2009
oh yeah… so long we were waiting for it. But 2 months for BuddyPress 1.2…

I’m curious: weren’t photo albums going to be a part of the next version initially?
In any case, great to see the plans for the future of BP!
Andy Peatling said on June 16, 2009
@SlaFFik: Hopefully we can aim for 4 releases a year, just as WordPress does. Look at the list of features for each release, it’s not something that’s going to get done in a couple of weeks.
@BeLogical: It means that by version 1.4 both will be included and operational in BuddyPress, no doubt before. If you’re desperate for photo albums, there is already a good plugin you can use.
BeLogical said on June 16, 2009
thanks Andy, I’m more interested in the status updates myself. i can’t host photo’s as it’s a space concern for me on my current hosting package. can’t wait for status updates!
Andy Peatling said on June 16, 2009
@BeLogical: Pre release versions will appear in the trunk quite soon, if you’re willing to try those out.
SlaFFik said on June 16, 2009
@Andy: Sure, I agree with you. And I meant 1.1 there in my comment (just misprinted).
And statuses will be wonderful, ’cause I’ve already started to write it, but found myself not in mine cup of tea…

Oh, and posting without admin-panel is highly valued! Just like in P2 theme…

Matt – Manoj Kumar already created a photo album. I helped him with what to put in it. You can comment pictures, and he also created a plug – in to limit the amount of pictures each user can upload.

Wondering about a more precise search feature. Manoj also created a plug-in to search for more than one word in the “search anything” box. Without it you can only search for one word. So, you couldn’t search for Andy Peatling – you’d only be able to search for “Andy.” And if it’s a site dedicated to people named “Andy” every single Andy would show up.
being silly… sorry. For my site, they are searching for models or photographers, so we want to be able to search for “photographer, perth, australia” but we can only search for one of those. if we just search for “perth” models and photographers come up, instead of only photographers.
There’s also a little bug with the alphabet search. it will only show one page of each letter. if you click on to go to the 2nd page it spits you back to the beginning of who is online on the main member page. for instance… we have lots of people starting with the letter M. We can only see the first page 1-10, 11-21 we can’t get to. Try it out if you haven’t already.
Anyway – i posted this on the testbp.org site, but i never get anyone to respond. Probably I ask too many questions. lol
Cheers. The software is rocking for us.

When are you posting the blog post on how to create dashboards?

It is so exciting to see Buddypress coming along!
Only the privacy options are the barrier that keeps us from going live. Very sad to see no date assigned to this highly important feature

This is excellent. The roadmap seems what most of us do want. Would definitely trial it for our buddypress site as soon as its out
Manoj Kumar said on June 17, 2009
@BeLogical: I have created a group for BuddyPress Albums. You are most welcome to join and discuss all issues there. I have a quick solution for you.
David Lewis said on June 17, 2009
@zeitweise: I believe privacy options are scheduled for version 1.2. “Core: Fine grained privacy controls for all content contained within an installation”
I don’t see the album component in the Roadmap. Is that what is meant by “pages and attachments for groups” in version 1.4?
thebloghouse said on June 18, 2009
Once I get my current project out of the way I will try and get involved somewhere via the groups guys but for now the roadmap sounds great so keep moving us forward!
Jason said on June 19, 2009
don’t you guys plan on releasing budypress for single wordpress installations? just wondering because it doesn’t say so on the roadmap.
Paul Gibbs said on June 20, 2009
BuddyPress for normal WordPress will be released sometime *after* WordPress and WordPress MU have merged.

Looks good!
Looking forward to Xprofile improvements in 1.1 and structured profile fields and external blog support in 1.3.

Hi Again Andy, I’ve sugested once that we could have a wire-to-wire so the first wire would work like a topic. (than bbpress wouldn’t be needed)
Another idea i have is: bpress integration with another bpress (like you did with facebook): So i have a bpress community of deaf people from Brazil and it could be integrated with another bpress website of deaf people from another place… or something like that… it would rock if i could link my bpress instalation to a friend’s. And then bpress would dominate the world = )

Wondering if 1.1 is still on track for August 17th (ish). Watching some of the comments on Twitter… sounds like it will be a nice update.

Andy can you please update the roadmap to include the move over to WordPress from MU? Is that going to happen at WordPress 3? I am awaiting this before I develop a Buddypress site.
