BuddyPress 1.1 Beta
September 14, 2009 in News
BuddyPress 1.1 is now available for beta testing. This version is intended for testing only, you should not try running it on production sites. You can download the beta via this zip file, or via subversion.
If you download the zip version you will need to download bbPress 1.0 separately. Please extract bbPress into the folder “bp-forums/bbpress” inside of the BuddyPress plugin directory.
As always, please report bugs on our trac site with the milestone “1.1″. You can also view all outstanding bugs for this version. Patches for any of those bugs are very welcome. Please use your BuddyPress.org username and password to log into the trac site.
Update: Please make sure you read the installation instructions as there are changes from previous versions.

What’s the difference between version 1 and version 1.1 when it comes to features?
driz said on September 14, 2009
Why do I need to extract the bbPress into the bp-forums folder? I already have the files at domain.com/forums/ so why would I need duplicates? Can you clarify!!! :/
abcde666 said on September 14, 2009
cool stuff ! Thanks a lot !
BTW:
why is the mouse-over at the Buddy-Bar (navigation header) behaving very slow recently ? It takes a few seconds to move from “Log In” to “Sign Up” when moving over with the mouse…

Another question:
IF the BP Themes are now inside of /wp-content/themes/ why is the Settings page asking for the BuddyPress theme? As it’s running off the WordPress Theme instead so what’s happening? Is this just a bug :/
Andy Peatling said on September 14, 2009
@driz: As I replied on twitter, BuddyPress expects bbPress files to be in a specific location. You can still select an existing install, but it will use specific bbPress files to run group forums.
Your second comment sounds like a bug, but make sure you have removed the /wp-content/bp-themes/ directory.
driz said on September 15, 2009
Not sure if this is also a bug or just on my site but visiting pages like /members etc redirect back to the homepage. Is this happening for all users or is it something on my site alone? Thanks.
Tyler said on September 15, 2009
I am looking forward to BuddyPress for the normal WordPress, does anyone know when this will be released?
Andy Peatling said on September 15, 2009
@driz: there is definitely something wrong with your install, please post your setup on the forums so we can help out.

Like a few people I installed BuddyPress with a view to expanding my social network site. Almost immediately I noticed that I got spammed and splogged to smitherines! The main culprit is the file wp-signup.php.
I installed several plugins to thwart the spammers but they always found a way to get through. So, I decided to uninstall BuddyPress, install the Theme My Login plugin which provides a different registration/login point then I uses .htaccess to redirect registration from /wp-signup.php to the new sign up address.
I also installed Sabre, AVH First Defense Against Spam and Super-CAPTCHA. With these I seem to have stopped splogs/spam completely.
The bottom line is that I don’t think BuddyPress is as secure as it could be as it compromises WordPress MU. Hopefully this new version 1.1 will rectify this.

Thanks Andy! I’m very excited about this — is the integrated forums UI now looking like it does over at http://testbp.org/? That’s the big one I’ve been looking for before I try to open my site up to users…
Grosbouff said on September 15, 2009
Hi, got some errors here folks
Fresh WPMU 2.8.4 and BP 1.1 Beta install. No others plugin than BP.
In the admin, I get
“Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at …\wordpress-mu\wp-includes\class.wp-styles.php:80) in …\wordpress-mu\wp-includes\pluggable.php on line 865″
when trying to activate plugins.
Then;
nothing works except home (blogs, members, groups…) : I always get things like :
Not Found
The requested URL …./wordpress-mu/blog was not found on this server.
Any ideas ?

Thanks BuddyPress 1.1 beta!
inspirosity said on September 15, 2009
Hey Andy, thanks much for the upgrade! We’re happy it came out before we launched so we can start the port, also happy to see the legacy theme structure is still being supported, as we’ve spent the last 4 months in development of one, haha.
Tried to use TAC but dont seem to have permissions to open a ticket.
Using the legacy theme structure, I’m getting the following error at wp-admin after the upgrade:
When logged in as blog 1:
Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /html/wp-includes/class.wp-styles.php:80) in /html/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 86
When logged in as user blog:
Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /html/wp-includes/class.wp-styles.php:80) in /html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 792
We disabled all plugins other than buddypress to verify where the problem was originating.
Thanks much and keep up the excellent work!
driz said on September 15, 2009
Suddenly all the problems mentioned earlier are now working? :/
But something that still confuses me / bothers me is the forums, don’t get what is happening their at all. In the settings it says I can delete the bbPress files if I so wish? What’s that mean, does BuddyPress actually have bbPress as part of it now, shouldn’t it really be separate and allow users to connect rather than use an inbuilt copy? Can you clarify all of this thanks.
bpisimone said on September 15, 2009
@driz
Yes BuddyPress now has bbpress built in, which makes setting it up much, much easier. I am not sure what you are trying to say with the connect part though.
@Andy
Great work Andy, I’m also testing the beta now and so far it looks perfect! One question though as I am now porting my custom theme over to the new structure:
I put the 1.1 theme version in my subv. client (http://svn.buddypress.org/tags/1.1-beta/bp-themes) so I can track changes made to the theme and add them to mine as well.
Is that how it works, or do I need to track the changes from the trunk branch? Sorry about the newbie question here, but it’s the first time I’m working with subversion.
inspirosity said on September 15, 2009
Group Members is showing the larger avatar image instead of the thumb which is breaking layout. You can see the problem on the buddypress site itself:

Is there any critical update i mean should i upgrade to 1.1 or wait for some more time. A little bit confused, I am thinking to give it a try locally.
abcde666 said on September 15, 2009
in the BP 1.1 Roadmap it says: “Blogs: * A quick post form via the theme.”
http://buddypress.org/about/roadmap/
Question:
Where can I find this “post form” at testbp.org ?
21cdb said on September 15, 2009
@ Erich73: I also discovered the lacking of the adminbar hovers! Anyone an idea how to improve the performance!?
Erich73 said on September 16, 2009
@Andy,
if you would enhance BP this way that users do not have to access the Dashboard in order to post on their own Blog or manage their own Blog, then BP would be just perfect.
I think the Dashboard and its interface is just too complicated for users…..
With your magic plug-in-skills, is there a chance BP will get just a very simple Blog-posting and Blog-management-system ?
Many thanks,

Bp 1.1 beta GREAT! Hope you’ll release the final version of 1.1!
I want to report some minor bugs
1. CSS Logout removing bp bar.
2. Displaying comment blog on side wide activity, there’s a bug. (e.g. if the author commented on his blog post, its successfully display on site wide activity. But if the user commented on the blog, only avatar appears.)
BTW thanks for Bp 1.1 Bp team specially to you andy!

A few bugs:
1: Profile page: Page is very long and the whole Profile drops down when rolling over Wire…
2: Update your status button broken. Also when clicking on it you get the What are you up to but not entry box.
3: When creating groups you can upload avatar and then crop but thats as far as you get . The group does get created.
That’s it for now.
Paul

Hi,
Sorry if this is the right place to post such a question but I’m wondering when the image galleries and status updater functions will be implemented, it said mid to late 2009 but we’re already kinda getting in late 2009
Alexandr said on September 19, 2009
Andy, hello!
But will there be a document showing the changes relative to version 1.0.3?
Also check out the demo site – could not find significant changes .. Now you can choose the type of activity on the site ..
What’s new?
))) and how does it affect the already deployed network?

Great Job Andy & The Team!
Can’t wait to see this go live!

Franco, status updates are in this upcoming 1.1 release. I’d guess at least late 2009 for gallery, depending on what else comes up.
Better Performance Needed said on September 20, 2009
Is there a list of the things that have changed so that I can run the latest Buddypress with 2.71 instead of 2.8 ? And if you are wondering why someone may want to do that, take a look at the monstrous increase in server load I got after “upgrading” from 2.71 to 2.84 it’s ridiculous.
If Buddypress is to be a viable alternative for serious production sites rather than a toy for hobbyists, someone needs to pay attention to *performance*. And before the “caching chorus” start singing, let me tell you I’m running WP-SuperCache, WP Widget Cache, eAccelerator as the opcode cache, MySQL query caching, and Nginx has replaced Apache completely and the server is a *dedicated* Quad Xeon with 8mb ram. Still, look at the 10x load increase with the 2.8 “upgrade”.

Suggestion:
What if we separate the folder of admin bar? (e.g. wp-content/plugins/admin-bar/ ~ then all of css and js files are in one directory) in 1.1 beta there’s a lot css bugs that i found special in theming the users blog site. I suggested that to minimal the admin bar css… I hope I’m correct..
I’m willing to help you guys!!!
Cheers!!

Doesn’t it suck to spend so much time on something like this meanwhile google goes and releases google wave and promises it to be open?
Good luck with BuddyPress. I’ll check it out when it comes out.

windump, comparing apples and oranges … tsk
Thanks Andy and BuddyPress Team for the major changes/improvements. Awesome. Cheers!

Where is the Facebook Connect option? Is that not available?
John said on September 22, 2009
Nice thanks guys. As long as you change over your bp themes to your wp themes folder and activate them before trying to initiate bbpress you shouldn’t get any errors. No more hair pulling! Hopefully we can get the live code soon.

Sorry Guys i couldn’t get TRAC to work for me tonight, perhaps someone can confirm the following bug for me.
Register as a new user.
Add a comment to a blog post (you should see that the username is not a link)
Go to the users profile page and edit and resave the profile
Add a comment to a blog post (the name will now be a link)
Any ideas on a fix?
Cheers

I’m having the same problem as Grosbouff, the root components doesn’t seem to work. When accessing them (/members, /blog, /forums and so on) I get a “Page Not Found”. When going directly to a “subpage” (for example /members/admin or /forums/topic) things seems to be in working order.
Is it just me doing something wrong overall with bp or is this a 1.1 issue?
The problem arises on a clean install of bp 1.1-beta-r1881 upon wpmu 2.8.4a.
Thanks!
(BTW, looking forward to start using the beta properly, lots of nice new features!)

I have started with buddypress from the very beginning and it has been back and forth the whole way which is very understandable, however I just want to get an idea, will this be the last change of directories? And will there be full directions on what directories need to be changed?
Thank you for you help…

Thanks for your hard work!
