I just upgraded and it worked fine now I'm trying to activate buddypress skeleton component but it resulted in a fatal error even after moving bp-example and bp-example.php file to wp-content/plugins/

Sample error bit:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare bp_example_register_widgets() (previously declared ...)

Any ideas of what might be wrong? Thanks.

Hi andy,

the front and back went blank, at the moment I de-activated BuddyPress, so before doing any update itself. Only after renaming the themes and plugins they both came back.
Only then I stared the (manual) upgrade.

It seems that if you use the standard themes you should either:
- change to another theme before updating
- update automatically (or manually by just overwriting?) without deactivating BP first.
Is that correct? It conflicts with the upgrade instructions.

Cheers, Harry

Your install should not go blank if you disable BuddyPress in the admin area. The front of your site will for a short time while you upgrade, but the backend should not.

Hmm, wish I had read Shaun's comments before trying to update.
This MUST be added to the upgrade instructions!

After you disable all related plugins, then disable BP main plugin, all goes blank. Not just main blog, but all blogs.

Had to rename plugin folder and bp-themes before I could even get into wp-admin. Would have been enough to rename only the BP plugins & themes, but hard to find out. Then of course all plugins were de-activated, so painfully checking all and re-activating them. Can't imagine what a nightmare this will be on a large live site.

So: definitely switch theme first if you are using the standard theme. Else all will go blank and you will have a hard time getting it back unless you are FTP connected. again: this should be in instructions, not hidden in some comment here...

Multi-line text box doesn't understand line breaks!

If users enter text, hit return, more text, hit return... it won't be acknowledged. When viewing the profile, it will smush it all together into one big sentence. Users shouldn't have to manually enter line breaks.

Also, there should be a way to distinguish URLs from content in the social network. If someone enters a URL for their blog or website in the social network, BP thinks its a keyword, so it looks in the site for it as a hyperlink. URLs in the social network aren't understood by BP either.

Please fix these in the next update. Thank you. Keep up the great work!

Got the site back up. Before you deactivate the buddypress plugin, switch to a different theme that does not depend on BP functions first, then deactivate all plugins that depend on BP, then if you are using bp-custom.php rename it, then deactivate BuddyPress, and now you are ready to update. Then of course you reactivate in reverse order.
