BuddyPress 1.2 Beta
January 25, 2010 in News
Now alive and ready for testing is the beta version of BuddyPress 1.2.
This version will work with both WordPress 2.9.1 and WordPress MU 2.9.1 or higher. We especially need standard WordPress installation testers to put BuddyPress through its paces. Installation instructions can be found in the readme.txt file.
If you’d prefer to not download and install the beta version, you can always help with testing by registering on our testing community site. This always runs the bleeding edge version of BuddyPress.
You can find a list of known issues and a place to post bugs via the BuddyPress Trac installation.
Testing Upgrades
If you’re going test upgrading a previous BuddyPress installation please read the following instructions (please only test backup copies when upgrading with a beta):
- If you’re using a custom theme that is not a child theme of bp-sn-parent, please download and install the backwards compatibility plugin before doing anything.
- Deactivate BuddyPress.
- Upload and overwrite your existing BuddyPress plugin directory.
- Delete “bp-default” and “bp-sn-parent” from your themes directory.
- Activate BuddyPress. You do not need to move any themes.
We also now have a development blog. Weekly meetings are held in IRC every Wednesday at 19:00 UTC. Happy testing!

wow Andy, Congrats to you and the BP team for getting the beta out.
This has been the most awaited release
Now time for testing the beta on Single User Wp.

Thank you Andy and the rest of the BP Team! I’ll make sure I test things out at the demo site! I can’t wait for the stable version to be released! Once again, thanks a bunch!

i’m testing the trunk for weeks now, and i’m happy..
i’ll try to provide bug reports, but mainly i think people can start running it without a problem… some addons will not work, but that’s just a question of days to see them upgraded as well.
Remkus de Vries said on January 25, 2010
Great progress guys! I have been playing with trunk for quite some time and love the new direction 1.2 has taken.
My guess BuddyPress is really going to take off as soon as 1.2 is released. Good stuff!

Nice work! Will give it a try right now.

Andy, I’m doing theme dev. Is it safe to assume you will not be doing any heavy theme changes before it’s release?

BP 1.2 compatible with MU 2.8.6?
What happens if you set the BP for single-blog on WPMU?

I agree with Remkus de Vries
Thanks guys !

when i try to activate the plugin (actual beta of buddypress 1.2) on the latest beta of wordpress a message pops up: “This Plugins has not a valid header”
hmmmm?
MrMaz said on January 26, 2010
Thanks for all of your hard work Andy. I have been working with 1.2 for a week now, and its a massive improvement over the 1.1 branch.
JP said on January 26, 2010
How do you recommend we keep 1.2 up-to-date as you and your teammates continue to fix bugs? Will the Buddypress beta update on its own or how will we benefit from resolved tickets in the weeks to come?
Everyone has put in a lot of time into this. Keep up the great work!
Andy Peatling said on January 26, 2010
@Alex: If you come across errors or an invalid header error please re-download the zip. There was a problem with the permissions on the files in the beta zip for a brief time.
Nicolas said on January 26, 2010
Been waiting a long time to put BuddyPress on my regular WP install. I’m about to get it done! Thanks Andy.

Good work BP Team, I am very excited about the update.
Alex said on January 26, 2010
When I try and click on the Members tab in the new BP 1.2 theme it says ”
Page Not Found, The page you were looking for was not found.” Although I have 3 members in my directory. What am I messing up?
Andy Peatling said on January 26, 2010
@Alex – you must have permalinks enabled on your WordPress installation. Please make sure you’ve read the readme.txt file step by step.
Andy Peatling said on January 26, 2010
JP: Your best bet if you want to continually keep up to date is to use Subversion and the bleeding edge trunk version.
You can find this at: http://svn.buddypress.org/trunk/
If you’re not sure how to use Subversion then there will likely be another pre-release fairly soon, which you can simply overwrite your existing BuddyPress files with. When the final version is released, you can do the same.

I’m ready to try editing some themes. Any good tutorials on how to alter the header images and colors and fonts?
Doug Daulton said on January 26, 2010
Do we have a first cut of release notes so we know what is new or changed.
JP said on January 26, 2010
Hi Andy,
I received the same error “This Plugin has no header” This error is after a new download of the ZIP 5 minutes ago and using the built in feature with WordPress to upload it.
I then tried through FTP instead and all worked out just fine. I now have it installed on my new WordPress site.
Upload via FTP “success”! Upload via WordPress admin “fail”
“Cheers”

Hi,
I am currently using wordpress MU. I selected WordPress MU just because i wanted to use Buddypress.
Now BP 1.2 will work with WordPress SU. I feel very much comfortable with WordPress SU. I have already 300+ users and 37 posts in my site.
Is there any way to completely migrate to WordPress SU with all data of users and buddypress?..
Wordpress MU is creating lots of problems with my favorite plugins. Is there any hope for me???
Andre said on January 27, 2010
Installed Buddypress in WP 2.9.1 (not MU). The dashboard disappeared – only the column on the left remained. After deleting the plugin from the file-system, all was back to normal again. There are so many items in the log that I don’t know if this is a known issue or not – does anyone know?
hitesh said on January 27, 2010
When I try to click on any of the tabs, it says “Page Not Found”.
Permalinks have been enabled.
Alex said on January 27, 2010
Hi,
i just downloaded the ZIP again but it will not work. Same Failure message again:
“The plugin does not have a valid header.”
It uploads the ZIP, installs it correctly but on Plugin-Activation theres the failure message.
Iam using the actual “Developer Edition” of WordPress 2.9.1
hmmmmm?
Andy Peatling said on January 27, 2010
hitesh: You must have a BuddyPress theme enabled, an make sure you have updated your .htaccess file.
Anton said on January 27, 2010
Testing it on normal WP 2.9.1
I get this error:
Warning: call_user_func_array() [function.call-user-func-array]: First argument is expected to be a valid callback, ‘groups_screen_create_group’ was given in
it happens on the page where you have to upload a avatar for the group you are creating and you click on the “back” button to go to step two again.
Anton said on January 27, 2010
The Site activity doesn’t show if there’s a new member that registered.
Alex said on January 27, 2010
Great Job!
One question: If you disable the friends component, then on the BP 1.2 theme when you click members this error message comes up:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_get_total_friend_count() in /home/myrgaorg/public_html/robertmorrissociety.com/home/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/members/index.php on line 20

will the ability to create and upload photo albums and video clips be coming at anypoint
Iva said on January 27, 2010
I poked around a bit and this is the only error I’ve come accross: Adding profile field groups and therefore feeds themselves as well does not work.
Can’t wait to see a more “common” way to include BuddyPress elements in regular themes.

Hi all, great work on the 1.2 it works and it looks nice too
I’m having a little issue in the members page and widget where only the admin user name is displayed while others are not shown near the avatar, there’s just an empty link. Does that happen to any of you?
I’ve registered users through the admin interface as my site won’t permit front page registration.
Marco

Does this beta installed on single user wp2.9.1 include forums? I have it installed and it’s running well except I don’t see forums.
Thanks
Pai
r-a-y said on January 31, 2010
@paisano,
I think you need to download bbPress into the following folder:
/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-forums/bbpress/
I noticed during an upgrade to BP 1.2 beta that I had to copy that folder there.
@Andy, is the BP script supposed to download a copy of bbPress?
