Buddypress vs. Drupal Commons vs. Ning vs. …

Public Group active 2 weeks, 5 days ago ago

To compare the relative merits of Buddypress, Drupal Commons, Telligent, Tiki Wiki, Ning, ExpressionEngine and other comparable community building products. I’ve created separate topics to compare each separate product with Buddypress. I profess to be no expert on the various products. But I’ve written down what I perceive to be some of the salient differences of each product with Buddypress. Feel free to disagree and share your own insights. I hope this set of product comparisons will spur the Buddypress development community to greater heights of innovation. It may be painful to see that Buddypress has competition. But Buddypress, with its tie-in with Wordpress, also has huge assets. Buddypress developers should be diligent in scanning and learning from the competition. And in keeping with the philosophy of open source development, that discovery can most benefit the Buddypress community if done openly.

    Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware Links:
    Home Page: http://info.tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php
    Do-it-yourself Demo: http://info.tikiwiki.org/Get+Tiki#Tiki_Demo:_Try_Before_You_Install

Note: version 5, a big improvement over version 4, was released on June 8, 2010.

    Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware Pros:
    Open Source
Feature rich core, including polls, wikis, and lots more
No outdated plugins or worries about the long-term commitment of plugin developers

    Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware Cons:
No significant plugin community; if it’s not part of the core, it doesn’t exist
Fewer theme options and custom layouts
Weak U.S. presence (stronger in Europe)
Weak support (e.g., no Wordpress or Buddypress for Dummies)

Dont really see what the point of all these forums you’ve created. This site is for BuddyPress.

Also your ill informed. @LisaSabinWilson has written the BuddyPress for dummies book.

You can use BuddyPress with any WordPress theme with a little adjustment.

You apparently misread the review. By weak support, I meant that Tiki Wiki did not have the same quality of support as Wordpress and Buddypress. I thought that was clear from the context (and, by the way, I’m a great fan of @LisaSabinWilson‘s books, which is why I mentioned their titles). In any case, I welcome any additional insights into the relative strengths of Buddypress and its peers.
