To add customisable Avatars to BuddyPress, Extended Profiles must be enabled.

Is it possible to have customisable Avatars without users having to register using an extra profile field?

If so, how?

Don’t think that will work. why use BuddyPress if you do not want profiles, it’s the main purpose.

Some sites might just need a username.

Wordpress already has usernames and there are plugins to allow uploadable avatars
