Allowing Users to Customize Their Background Image (15 posts)

    I’ve been on the hunt for a plug-in that would allow users/groups to upload (or at least link to) a background image that would then be applied to their profile/group page.

    There are a few discussions over at bpdev – and a few attempts via plugins like Profile CSS – but so far nothing seems to allow users to do it without at least knowing CSS.

    Has anyone come across any better solutions for this? I’d really rather not custom-code this if possible.

    After a little more research I found a premium plugin that offers some of what I’m looking for:

    Figured I’d share, but I’m still open to other options if anyone finds any.

    That looks really good – have you tried it yet? Any conflicts?

    @WillDWhite
    Did you end up buying this? How well does it work?

    FWIW, I’m working on my own plugin for this, which is coming out when I’ve finished my theme. No time table for release.

    Screenie:

    Allows you to upload unlike the plugin above and supports groups. What my plugin currently doesn’t have is a default selection of custom backgrounds.

    Nice Ray! :)

    Do you have a Preview of the new plugin on your site? Would you mind giving a link?

    Can users pick colors?

    Ooh! Very cool… I was going to start playing around with the idea for my theme too. But I’ll wait for your plugin which will likely be infinitely more robust than my n00b brain could churn out :-)

    Cool stuff! Would be very helpful!

    @virtuali- Yeah I have a link to where it’s being developed.
    It’s called http://localhost/ :D

    @gregfielding- I’ve decided not to add colors because every theme is different and the plugin has to be generic enough to suit each theme; FYI, my own theme is going to expand on this and add colors for text, border color, etc.

    Gotcha. I was thinking of a color-picker ala twitter. Of course most would probably use images anyway. Sounds great @r-a-y

    @r-a-y I second everything. Thanks :-)

    You need a tester? :)

    @r-a-y did you ever post the plugin code on github or pastebin? I have recently forked a plugin to enable users to upload a profile image, as per Facebook timeline, but at the moment this only works for the member header – not groups.

    I chose not to provide a range of default images – but this is easily done by hacking the header function that comes with the Twenty Eleven theme.

    I will get around to sharing my modified plugin when I’ve finished tidying it up. It is also BP 1.5 compatible.
