Email notifications to pending group members

Can anyone verify for me if a member who’s group status is pending should receive an email notification about group activity? We’re trying to track down an issue where a registered user is receiving email notifications for a private group they don’t belong to but have requested membership to. We use both BuddyPress Group Email Subscription and BP Group Documents and believe it is an issue with one of those plugins. Anyone else had a similar problem?
