I have a need to group the site users on my site.

Basically on my closed site (the closed, log-in required site is setup) the site users will belong to an ‘entity’, and those users will be able to interact with all the other users and groups of that entity, as normal. Site users will not be able to see or friend, or participate in groups (or see the groups) from any of the other entities.

I am not sure where I may look to add a user filter which would achieve something like this. basically users and groups would have an extended profile field called entity, and based on this field, any lists/groups/etc would be filtered based on that field.

Any idea where to start??
