BuddyPress

Does anyone here have any tips to share with regards to network-wide (“global”) menus, in particular in use with BuddyPress?

WPMU Tutorials recently did a pre-release of a networkwide menu plugin, but unfortunately I could not get it to work. I have yet to see the plugin in action, so if someone gets a working demo up, I’d really like to see it.

Recently though, I realized< BuddyPress already does exactly what I want from a network-wide menu: It adds a global menu across every site on your network upon ‘Network Activate’.

I figure it shouldn’t be that hard to modify the BP top menu, ideally through a plugin or (child-)theme. These are some of the pointers I’ve come by:

So now I ask you, WP/BP gurus: On a WordPress Network site with BuddyPress enabled, which would you recommend?
1 – Modifying the BuddyPress top-menu
2 – Using a plugin, like “Networkwide Menu”
3 – Custom coded menu

An example of the network wide menu plugin is http://www.umw.edu.

Per http://ten-321.com/blog/portfolio/university-of-mary-washington/, the UMW website is a WP multi-network install consisting of 213 WP sites. If you visit any of the sites in that install you see the same primary navigation menu (the first menu item is About UMW).
