On Sasstrology.com, the users can’t turn off all notifications like in one go. You have to manually go to each group you’re in and switch off notifications. Considering how easily and often people join new forums, its kind of troublesome. Our webmaster says he can’t change anything about it, so I’m wondering if we’re missing something, there is a plug-in or anything that can be done about it.

Have you explored under the user profile > settings > notifications? Whilst that does not have maybe exactly it will allow you to modify as a front end user some settings. Perhaps though this is not going to be suitable so just a suggestion.
