Well in a follow-up, the mobile home page keeps resetting back to the standard version without me doing anything. So thats a bug I think.
I think there should just be a right panel in the page editor that allows you to select mobile theme template.

Ok I think I get it – basically there has to be a front.php file in the standard, non mobile theme and a front.php file in the mobile plug in and they both have to have the same template name – ‘Home’ in my case and the front page has to be set to use [...]

Yes but what if you already have a custom template for the home page of your NON MOBILE version?
