Found it:

I called get_total_subgroup_count function in bp_group_hierarchy_classes.php passing the group id of 0, which returns the total count for the top-level parent groups.

@sushkov I agree that the message is a warning but interestingly I do not have WP_DEBUG set to true. If I do set WP_DEBUG to true, then I get all the WP notices and warnings.

Just an FYI, the new release (0.9) I downloaded from this group works fine. Must have been some mix up in the downloadable archives (most likely on my part!).
