line 141 in enhanced-buddypress-widgets-bp-functions.php (0.2.1) sets the class=selected attribute on the #popular-groups anchor regardless of what initial state you select in the admin.
I pulled out the the first one which is declared outside the if block and all was well.

If you are already logged in it seems that the registration page bounces you back to the homepage. Perhaps following the principle of least surprise it should be a bit less clever and just show the registration page with a notice that you are already registered, as seems this has tripped up a few people. I banged my head against this one too. Seems the registration page bounces you back to the hompage if you are currently signed in (and hence already registered).
