I was having similar problems, slow to load and lots of resources. The problems seemed to dissapear when I removed a lot of the profile fields.

tyvm, still getting used to bp trying to integrate my own plugins to work with buddypress.Takes time so I better do it before Diablo comes out.

Working on a new D3 theme with buddypress integrated. Theme was based on twentyten mostly and then hacked to this. Still need some more coding but all ajax functionalities for BP are integrated into the theme.
