Word today from WordCamp Denver - BuddyPress for Wordpress (standard, not MU) is coming. It looks like the only main difference is that you cannot have blogs/sites for individual users (obviouslly). But from the sounds of it, everything else is there.

It was said to be coming "in a few weeks". Some might have already known about this, but i've been too focused on other things including a presentation I gave about BuddyPress at BarCampMiami this past Sunday.

Opening for discussion. What do you think? :)

Since you're asking, I think maybe you should have let Andy announce this when it was time. ;)

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I think it only makes sense to offer BuddyPress to the widest audience. In my opinion, BuddyPress does what everyone wishes WordPress would have done in the first place, so I feel like this was inevitable and a very good thing.

Btw David, I was the tall skinny guy that helped you get the projector working at your presentation.

Where can we get more info on this? This could possibly be huge. Just for the fact that most people who use wordpress aren't that technical. So, if anyone has any data on this project I would like to see it.

Thanks for letting the cat out of the bag this is HUGE!!!

It is coming, it won't be in a few weeks though.

There are a few things to work out first -

1. Registration fields on the standard WP register page
2. Performance on a shared host

Other than that it already works with a few minor changes I'm yet to commit.

So, are you saying that there is a version somewhere that will work now? Because I'd love to test it. I have a dedicated server and the current ver of WordPress. If you got a download then I got some time to test...

I have a feeling the only version that works now is on Andy's test computer and will not be released for awhile! :)

"in" a few weeks or "for" a few weeks.

There's a distinct different in meaning there. :)

Perfect, I hope it wont be too long because I prefer to have a social network without a blog/site as long we could migrate into WPMU later on.

Jed, migrating from WP.org to WPMU is not a super simple task unfortunately. It is possible, but you are still diving into phpMyAdmin more than likely.

My advise for a migration is to do it at a time when your user base is low and the database is small so that you can manipulate the data easier. :)

If you don't want the blog functionality but *might* want it later, you can still install WPMU and just disclude the BuddyPress Blogs plugin.

Not wishing to be a party pooper but my vote DEFINATLY goes for getting the feature-set for BuddyPress MU complete before even looking to release for Single Instance WP... and that includes the yet to be implemented BuddyPress Photo Album component.

@conceptfusion if the following gets implemented, it won't slow down development for either WP or WPMU.

Well that's interesting, and pretty much perfect for both platforms actually.

Makes me wish I was more involved in WordPress from the get go, sometimes I get a little lost in the code still to be able to put something that cool together.

Good job Andy.

Wow.. the Site Wide Plugin looks fantastic.. This makes for loads of possibilities.. like a standard wpmu album plugin. of course only after integrating the code to display it in the members directory. ..

I would really like to see the blogging functionality get added to the buddypres administration pages rather than the standard wp admin back-end. Any hopes of this being done?

@johnjamesjacoby - I wanted to say thanks, but i didn't catch your name. Thanks! And since this was released at WordPressDenver, I figured the cat was out of the bag already. Andy counts on big mouths like you and me. :)

Back on topic, I am tending to agree a bit with conceptfusion - many at the BarCampMiami were asking about photos. At the same time, having BP for WP is going to accelerate awareness and demand for BP and creation (or adapting) plugins/themes. This is one "con" that BP had to overcome in order to accomplish that "BP will do for social networks what WP did for blogs" speech I did last Sunday. :)

Is that patch in the latest version of MU?

No, it can be tested by downloading the WPMU Branch of 2.7. It is not in trunk.

Zip at the bottom of the page or if you use SVN you can use that URL as well.

Supporting WP as well as WPMU will not slow down or change the development of BuddyPress at all. I just want to make that clear.

Supporting WP should (and will) be a matter of flicking a switch and continuing along the same roadmap. Most of that switch is already in place, the things I mentioned before are not really blockers, when all things are considered.

So do we have a realistic time line for BuddyPress for WP?

Given that you are delaying the release of BP until site-wide plugins are introduced into MU, it might also be an idea to wait until the WP version is also ready.

Although as anxious as anyone to see the official release, it occurs to me that any project only gets one shot at it's 1.0 release and all the publicity that attends it. That one-off burst of attention can make all the difference to how much traction you gain in the long-run.

IF BuddyPress jumps into the spotlight as an MU-only project, that's obviously going to be of great interest to people already familiar with MU but the average blogger is going to scratch his head and not get much further than the fact that BuddyPress isn't for "normal" WordPress. Disappointed, he will return to his extensive collection of porn and ignore all future mentions of BuddyPress.

If, on the other hand, BuddyPress appears in the spotlight as a dual-release, with both a WP and an MU version, it will garner far more publicity, will be more obviously relevant to ordinary bloggers and will generally create a far larger splash, hopefully translating into greater momentum for the project.

Just a thought :)

WP to WPMU wasn't hard at all, actually. I was really nervous taking my site from WP to WPMU but it went without a hitch.

BP for WP sounds sweet!

I couldn't agree more with donnacha. I would rather see patience and success, than instant gratification and failure. (not that it would ever fail of course:)

How hard do you think integrating BuddyPress into a site already running WP would be? Would it just be a matter of inserting php tags into where you would like certain features to appear? Or would it mean redesigning a whole theme so that it would work with BuddyPress?

I'm not much of a coder, but I know my way around. About how hard do you think integration with a WP theme would be?

You could try upgrading your site to MU but, personally, I would simply wait for the WP version of BuddyPress to arrive.

My guesstimate is that Andy will aim to coincide with the release of WP 2.8, currently scheduled for the beginning of April put will probably get pushed back to the middle of the month. He has said that the non-MU version of BP is almost ready to roll but I guess he wants to see how the release of the MU version goes first and, obviously, he isn't going to release for 2.7 with 2.8 so close.
