    @bakelady

Thanks Shane. I’ll get someone to look into it.

Hello again. I’ve just done a test as ‘all mail’ from one of my the BP groups which when received is as normal, so it seems it’s Daily digest that is received in html code.
    Thanks

    Hi Mercime
As it turns out, the problem was not with the User Role Editor.
As Becs has mentioned above, she has added a temp fix to my website. But the only way anyone can request membership to the private group is via the Group Directory and not via the group home page itself.
It seems to be working up to a point, if people understand the difference between adding via the Group Directory and not via the group itself.
I wonder if anyone else has had the same problem.
    Thanks for you help.

@mercime. I’ve just discovered that although I deactivated the User Role editor, people are still not able to join the private group, even though I’ve successfully done a test with a new testing member.
I’ll have to wait until my website theme designer gets back to me to see if she can sort this out. If we manage to sort this out I’ll let you know for future reference.
    Thanks
    Lynn

@mercime Thanks for the reply. I didn’t design the custom theme so not confident in changing to Twenty Twelve to test your theory, I’ll have to wait for my friend, the theme designer, to get back to me to test it.

But I’ve now established that it’s ( when deactivated) the User Role editor that is stopping people from joining a private group within the website. It had a very recent update. But I still need to find out why ‘contributors’ are not able to add blog posts and events

I’ll keep plugging away. No pun intended 🙂
    Thanks again.

I’ll delete the account that you created when you looked at the site. Thanks again.

Hi . I feel so silly because the mystery of the missing tool bar is now solved. Only admins and contributors need to see the toolbar, users in general have no need for it. All their menu settings are set within BP.

Thank so much for your help.

Hi again, I just want to add that I have just updated to the latest BP and the missing toolbar problem is still there, along with a few other things as well for new users. such as friends not being listed when they want to invite them to join newly created groups, not sure how long this has been going on, but definitely before the later BP update.

    Hi Dyer,

I’ve just deactivated the User Role plugin and the problem is still there, no toolbar for new users. This is the link to the plugin that I’m using. http://shinephp.com/user-role-editor-wordpress-plugin/

Default setting is for all new users to be set as a subscriber.

    Many thanks

    Lynn

I guess not. Active is better than none active.

    Hi Ray
Thanks for your very quick response.
My friend who looks after the technical side of my website for me tried doing this, but it hasn’t worked, she says it’s because we have a custom theme.
    Thanks anyway.

Just thought I would let you know that I downloaded the Buddypress Edit Activity Stream plugin and it’s working fine on my buddy press 1.5.5.

I’m no expert, but it’s doing what I want, apart from actually deleting the activity itself. But I can edit errors.

There is no option for a left sidebar. However, in the next couple of days the site is to change. Thanks everyone for your help. All robots have gone too.

Bad Hammer looks better. I’ll delete the Block by Maths and use that as it gives a list of who is spammer etc and who isn’t. As you say, it’s also been tested.

The ‘Block Spam by maths’ seems to be doing the trick in stopping the robot members. I haven’t had any since I activated it last night, I’ve had legitimate members joining which shows it still allows humans to join. But I’m still cautious about widgets that show a ‘not tested’ warning, so I would be very interested in knowing if the one you are testing works out ok.

@paul Gibbs Thanks for reassuring me that I don’t have to keep changing browsers.

I just have to solve the problem of why I can’t have 3 columns back on my site instead of the two, it looks awful. Any suggestion as to where I post a troubleshoot question for this little problem. Take a look and you’ll see what I mean. http://clandestinecakeclub.co.uk/

‘bp registration options’ is definitely the culprit. I’ve added the plugin you suggested even though it says it’s not been tested on the Current WP. I’ll see how it goes. Thanks for the link too as it now explains the new pages within BP as I thought it had something to do with my friend who is redesigning my site.
I’m still very reluctant to add any plug-in that have not been tested on the current WP.
Many thanks for your help in the mean time.

    @PaulGibbs

Would be interested to know if Firefox is best browser to use when updating.

I have a similar problem. Since the upgrade my system crashed. A friend deleted the BP registration option Plugin for me which seemed to bring the dashboard back for me to use. But crashed the site when I reinstalled it. I know it wasn’t fully compatible with WP in the first place but it did a half decent job.

I’m getting robots joining as members and I’m having to delete them one at a time. The ‘User pending’ never worked, all captchas don’t work either or are not compatible with latest WP.
My theme (BP columns 1.2) has also changed from 3 columns to 2.
My friend is working on changing the look of the site, but if I cannot get any of the important widgets to work I shall be spending most of my time dodging the robots.
Any suggested help is appreciated. Even if it’s possible to go back to the previous BP until it’s sorted out.
    Thanks in advance.
