I tested this out, it does indeed work.
I had the same problem – it has something to do with how you are calling the avatar. Check your function against the template default, you will see what you’re doing wrong.
I’m not sure I get it, chip-d. So in my registration form do I need to put something like:
< code ><label for=”signup_username”>CUSTOM</label>
<input type=”text” name=”bp_custom_field” id=”bp_custom_field” value=”” /></ code >
