The solution is to add
define( ’BP_ENABLE_USERNAME_COMPATIBILITY_MODE’, true );
to the top of the define list in the wp-config.php file. Fixed for things like john.smith not sure about other characters.

ok I know I might be the only person with this issue but my buddypress usernames have dots in the middlde like john.smth this breaks the message system. The solution is to add

ok I have to correct my own post – it is not old users and new users but users with a . (period or full stop) in their username. If a user has a period in their username the message system malfuntions.
I have this bug in the message system. When I click Send Private Message to an old member of the site the ‘Send To’ comes up blank. I have to type in the username which autofills in a crazy sort of way – showing some suggestions that are wrong and don’t even begin with the [...]
Arg! I have to reply to my own email to point out the hyperlink on the word john does not appear as a hyperlink but appears as the code for a hyperlink if you know what I mean. Like:

I am using WP 3.1 and BP Version 1.2.8 both latest versions. When users click reply in a discussion they used to get emailed something like:
