Got it working following advice in the above thread to change my .htaccess file to allocate more memory:
### Set PHP directives ### php_value memory_limit 96M
I used 60M instead of 96M and the plugin activated. 30M did not work.
Hope this helps others with the same, very random issue, and thanks mercime for the pointer.
