    @pawriter

    Apologies for my site error – I have been using free hosting for about 12 months and it now appears I have violated CPU usage by more than 20% over 1000 times. I can get the site back if I like to upgrade to paid hosting – hmmmm will consider my options.

    The BP Members Avatar Map does provide for complete address – I just gave my members the option to only include city or even just country as greater depth of information was not necessary for my application. There is an information field which can be used for brief details once a marker is selected and a link in that information bubble takes you to the members profile page. The marker is either the default or the graphic chosen as avatar by the member so their images could be used.
    Apart from the map being on the entire member registry page rather than group pages this would seem to fit your requirements however I haven’t tried it with any version of WP newer than 3.2.1

    Maybe I’ve got this wrong but I read this as just a request to be able to scroll through a range of other people’s blogs – like on wp.com or blogger just looking around at what people are doing.

    Why not simply invite your contacts to use the normal registration process at the point of contact?

    For simple purposes can set up an extended field (say ‘Country’) in Buddypress without need for any particular plugin and have it included, even ‘required’, then you can use the ordinary WordPress search to filter the list of members to reflect only those matching the country of search. However I am not certain if you can restrict the content of that field to a particular known dataset of countries (ie you would have to rely on members correctly listing their country).
    If you want to go further you could use a plugin like the BP Avatar Map ( https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-members-avatar-map/ ) which needs a ‘Location” extended field using various depth of location eg. just USA or Sydney,Australia or Sydney, NSW, Australia – the WordPress search should then find all from Sydney or all USA etc. The plugin includes a map for the Directory page but you could probably exclude that if you wanted.
    Hope this helps.

    I am interested in the answer to this too – sadly not knowledgeable enough to answer it.

    You are welcome to join my site ( http://www.experiment.vacau.com ) just to see the “Location” field in the registration page and then see the results in the members (locate) directory and of course your profile. you will find you can alter the city/country detail etc. to refine the positioning.
    Hope you find what you need.
    Bon chance!

    Just took a look at imath’s bp-checkins plugin too and seems a great solution if you want to follow the mobility of users. I will see if I can integrate it in my site in addition to the static ‘home’ locations my site uses. This may seem like overkill but since my site is a prototype it may be useful for my members to provide feedback on which mapping components are most appropriate.

    BP Members Avatar Map does use cities and towns which are then translated into latitude and longitude
    I use a combination of BP Members Avatar Map for my directory page and BP User Profile Map for individual maps – they seem to work quite well together but do require a ‘Location’ extended field
    My member directory and individual profiles are not particularly ‘pretty’ but they are functional
    I should emphasise I am still using WP 3.2.1 and BP 1.5.1 You are welcome to visit my site to see how they are working http://www.experiment.vacau.com the directory page is called Locate and you should be able to see the map as a visitor – if you look at the Tasmania, Australia portion of the map and follow any of the avatar links: you should see the profile outcomes.
    Most of the other ‘members are spam’ that I am slowly cleaning up but they contribute to my site activity, so I tolerate them.
    If you return to the About page you will see a Pulsemaps Visitors map – most of the ‘Australia’ visits are me – but they are from many different places because my IP is dynamic and belongs to my ISP not to me.
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks I will try
    At the moment I seem unable to adequately search the site, create new topics, find topics started, find replies and generally navigate well, except for searching plugins which does seem to be ok.

    I agree about scepticism on free hosting – I wasn’t suggesting moving the data simply trying the WP configuration with the established theme then adding Buddypress and looking at the result.
    However as a newcomer to WP and BP perhaps my thinking is a bit woolly.
    I dont trust my data to free hosting either but I am finding it a good way to learn what seems to fit together for my purposes.

    I assume that the loss of links to stickies and New Topic when refreshing Support is symptomatic of the same problem. I cleared my browser cache but I shall shut down and reload the browser too and see if that helps.

    Thanks for the prompt reply Paul.
    I seem vaguely to remember using square brackets to refine general searches but now I’m not sure if that was in Buddypress or WordPress.
    Is there a workaround or should I just post my topics anyway?
    On registration issues I end up posting in both places because I can’t determine if its a WordPress or Buddypress problem.

    Regards

    Paul

    If you don’t already use free hosting you might like to consider using http://www,000hosting.com or http://www.cixx6.com for prototyping changes they both have fairly easy WP installation which might enable you to set up a duplicate/development site (minus members and using their provided domain) to see how installing Buddypress will affect your theme without affecting your production site.
    Just a thought.

    Thanks once again for a quick and accurate response Mercime, I have since realised that the Name is published so I shall post a further, separate request about including unpublished information in the registration form.

    Thanks for the advice.
    I never seem to be able to find where to actually post in the respective groups generally – one of the few that I have found posting straightforward is Events Manager.
    I will have another look in the group to see if I can find where to post.

    Regards

    Paul

    Once again many thanks Mercime.
    Somehow I had equated the Menus option in the theme with creating sidebar vertical menus rather than altering the ‘navbar’.
    I have made some changes to my satisfaction and even discovered that if I add a custom link as a top level item to head-up sub-menus, then remove the URL, I can avoid the need for a landing page for that tab (forcing users to use a child link).

    @pawriter

    Thank you for your efforts. You were correct about the cause of the problem but the error was mine typographically. I left a ‘d’ out of the header-buddypress.php file name so presumably the original header.php file content from the twentyeleven theme was still being used – causing the same result as you described. I must connect a decent monitor to my netbook for this work I think, that and get better sleep.
    From my perspective this has determined me to spend the time to gain a better understanding.

    Once again thanks for your guidance.

    Thanks again –
    Yes both BuddyPress and Buddy Press Template Pack plugins are activated.
    Here is a screenshot of the Members Directory page –
    https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/LLpt3eGzxlUSY1kPNJq45LGj7ar25XRPe7l625Mbz28?feat=directlink
    (in case you cant see it: it is very similar to your shot of misalignment after step 3 except the BP element component widths are ok)
    ALL BP pages are affected in the same way.

    I also have an “Activate’ page that asks for an activation key, although it doesnt appear on the navigation menu, and which has the same misalignment of the sidebar items..

    @pawriter

    I have made the suggested changes to style.css in the BP Twenty eleven child theme but the misalignment of sidebar elements remains on the BP pages – it has always been fine on the theme blog page.

    @pawriter

    Thank you I will proceed with the re-alignment step then Finish.

    Do I have to have the sidebar on all the BP pages – I do want it on the blog page but it is superfluous elsewhere?

    @pawriter

    Thanks mercime,
    I did try that but the cropping tool snaps back each time I try to extend it. But I will try making my images bigger again and provide some white space around them to see if that helps.

    @pawriter

    I have activated the BP Twenty Eleven child theme so I now see content in BP pages with a parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<' in C:xampphtdocswpresswp-contentthemesBP Twenty Elevensidebar-buddypress.php on line 9 – which is where I put the additional code suggested ()
    It is inside the <?php immediately below the descriptive comment and above the line
    $options = twentyeleven_get_theme_options ();

    Have I put it in the wrong place?

    This parse error appears on all BP pages but not the original theme pages.

    My dashboard is still telling me I have activated the BuddyPress Template Pack, but not completed the setup process.

    Sorry for my ignorance
    .

    @pawriter

    I have added the header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php files as suggested. When I checked the Appearance it gave me a broken theme message which I fixed by correctly renaming the ‘twentyeleven’ theme directory in style.css so I now have Twenty Eleven still installed but I guess I may need to Activate BP Twenty Eleven child theme now?

    @pawriter

    Thanks – sorry I had to go to work for a couple of hours.

    I have done what you suggested – where do I go next? Do I try to continue with Step 3 of the Compatibility Process creating header-buddypress.php and sidebar-buddypress.php?
