    Hi

I have never actually used the feature of adding custom or editing profile fields. Under Users => Profile Fields, there’s nothing, I guess meaning none have been added manually.
On the Edit User => Extended Profile tab, the only options there are Update Profile from pre-selected “Spammer” to “Active”, which does not work, View Profile and Edit Profile Photo.

So I do not see where I could delete that field.

    Yes, it was that.

    Hi

So I did just that, deactivating all 28, except one for https, installed recently but as you see, no luck. Quite strange.
Can uninstalled & deleted plugins still have an effect? I forget it’s name, but the other security plugin I can think of & given up over a year ago, when author gave it up, it was however removed, then.

    Very strange.

    Hi

    Cannot delete Spammer

Thank you for the quick response.
    The question is which plugin?
I tried deactivating a couple starting with Aksimet and when I reached bbforum & buddypress & deactivated both: the pink background of the “Spammer” user disappeared, as well as the link “Extended”. They both do not reappear with bbforum activated. (See screenshot)
That made me assume it’s Buddypress that’s responsible for this pink background and the Extended link.
Moreover it’s under “Extended” edit of User on “wp-admin/users.php”, that one gets the status shown and where one can change from Spammer to Active, which will not work.

So just wondering … Or may be I’m just overlooking something obvious?

    Regards

I need to add, Wordfence is set to immediately block non-existent usernames and this particular user is actually there. Checked the spelling several times, correct password! So could it be Wordfence takes a cue from this Buddypress Spammer status business?
Anyway, the question is how does the admin remove another admin or other user from spammer status?

Isn’t there a possibility to edit posts? I wanted to update the just written post above, but could not find an appropriate link! The only “Edit” button below this textarea leads to => “https://buddypress.org/” 🙁

    Hi

    Thank you for responding.
I tried a few other themes including twentythirteen & Mesocolumn – no difference.
Then today I disabled all plugins except buddypress & bbforum.

    Observation:
    #1. The mentioned links worked.
#2. I then first activated a number of security plugins + Hyper cache plugin. Problem back, of page not found, until I deactivated Hyper cache.

This was solved by reading this article => http://www.buddyboss.com/buddypress-speed-and-performance/ & doing this:

By default this plugin will cache all of your site’s pages, including your BuddyPress-specific content like activity posts and forum posts. This is not good, as your BuddyPress content is constantly updated and needs to remain fresh. To fix it add the following lines into “URI to reject” in the “Filters” settings panel of Hyper Cache:

    /forums/
    /groups/
    /members/
    /activity/
    /blogs/
    /messages/
    /register/
    /activate/

… I think current plugin terminology is “Exact URIs to bypass” & “(Starting with) URIs to bypass”, which I did and clearing the cache.

#3. As I continued activating, I discovered the used https://wordpress.org/plugins/404-to-start/ also causes if I try to go to my profile page or for example /members/user-x/, etc to re-direct to site front page, with no error.

I have to look into this later. The other plugins I had tried before caused some issues, so I was happy with this re-direct plugin.

Will report back, at least if I get a response from author or get a plugin not causing issues, someone could recommend one ;).

    Thank you & regards.

    Update:
I have to add I have a set up of Buddypress/bbpress on another site on same server & sharing same account (Justhost.com) & there is no issue, with those pages. WordPress & ALL used plugins are up-to-date.

    Hi
It is over a month since I requested for some assistance, but probably either my case is unusual or has been overseen.

I remembered this, right after writing a newly registered person to login & if they want edit their profile by going o the link top-right. However as mentioned in the original post, ALL these links lead to a page not found error.
As said, I have no link-related errors outside buddypress/bbforum (where they told me the issues are bbpress & not bbforum-related & referred me here).

    Links not working include /members/abc/, /groups/xyz/ & /members/abc/profile/.
As mentioned, I have no idea when the the problem started or what triggered it.

I would appreciated some help as these links not working defeats the purpose of Buddypress.

    Kind regards

PS – the high number of DB tables is because of some web directory plugin, which is otherwise very good – which has very many of them. 😉

    Hi

The index.php file is clean, …

I used the plugin “Change DB Prefix” which enables a db prefix table change & in wp-config.php with a click. Good since the db has 175 tables 🙁 … ;), thi sbeing a community site with a number of functions.

I added BuddyPress-Honeypot, … but does it not matter it seems to have had no changes since 2012?

I temporarily disabled Wanguard to see if the 2 steps above + existing antispam plugins can handle this. Will then see about the .htaccess issue tomorrow etc.

    Many thanks & kind regards

    Hi

Thank you for all the responses.

Well, the issue of spam registrations & comments with the above mentioned plugins in addition to SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam, Wordfence Security (?), etc had worked for months & was manageable, occasionally getting something in sometimes after weeks. I also blocked all IPs of spammers who would tried to login, etc.

A few days ago, though I started getting a barrage of bot-registrations + groups with bogus content created. New registrations would come in as soon as I deleted some.

Since it was late in the night in the middle of a very busy period, I thought someone probably getting similar issues could mention some quick solution I could find the following day.

It was not my first time in the forum. Some of the above solutions were found through searching the forum, which i agree should be the first step.

So far – in addition to the above plugins I first added JP User Registration Blacklist, WP-SpamShield and also reluctantly disabled user group creation. (Is there a plugin that enables moderation of user created groups, allowing the moderator to approve user created groups?)

That stopped the group creation, but spam registrations continued coming. So like recommended above, installed Wanguard, though this being a small site which currently gets in very little income, it is not yet worth paying for it. I hope the free wanguard account can work for a while.
That since yesterday only let in one or 2 registrations by some criminals, this being one of them – details shown by some plugin:

    Benutzername: clairmcconnan

    E-Mail: synfhongegizi@mail.ru

    Angezeigter Name: Claire McConnan

    Vorname: Claire

    Nachname: McConnan
    ….
    IP Address : 107.181.70.207
    Reverse DNS : 107.181.70.207
    Reverse DNS IP : 107.181.70.207
Reverse DNS Authenticity : [Possibly Forged]
    Proxy Info : No Proxy
    Proxy Data : 107.181.70.207
    Proxy Status : FALSE
    HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE : en

Names & emails suggest they mostly originate from Russia.

danbp suggested using .htaccess to block Ru-based submissions. I will look into BUT – on an unrelated Drupal-based site, I ever had a much more serious attack, with as many 25,000 attempted login/post attempts a day(!), which were blocked by the Drupal mollom plugin BUT that constantly filled some DB table, probably logging visits/attempts, to several 100MBs a day, causing me problems with the webhost. Source of attacks was Russia, ukraine, China & Poland.

The only solution that worked was adding literally several 10,000 lines of complete IP(blocks(?)s from those countries I got from some site to the .htaccess that blocked them out. Only that helped.

Later on, though – months on, the web host removed that .htaccess file, because my site account was supposedly overusing server resources. I am not sure that had anything to do with the IP address lines in the .htaccess file, but the good thing is that a similar attack has not happened again.

An .htaccess solution that only involves naming a country ( … ^(.*).ru/(.*) …) & not its thousands of IPs would of course be great & preferable, but I will do a search & see. My site does not need a single Russian & so can do without the country.

Ultimately, for the time being – what I would need is a functioning free solution until the currently small site can pay for itself, later on. This particular site had not had anything similar in over a year, assuming Wanguard cannot be used …

    Anyway, thank you all.

    @valuser

Hi, I guess you are right.
The problem I have actually been having, though is finding a NEW group created every now & then, with a long spam description & then by NONE registered creatures, which I have to delete, who according to Statcounter have not even been on the site, because there is no record of them!

That is why I am looking for a way to stop this type of group creation, possibly by some bot.
I hope this is possible to allow only registered folks to create groups. I thought approval would help to catch bot/other non-serious creations, before their stuff gets public.

    Regards

    🙂

    Hi

    Thank you for the response.

Would that then mean only the admin can create groups?

I had thought may be it is possible to have only REGISTERED folks be able to create groups.

Is there anything like getting new groups approved before getting published like topics/comments?

    Regards

    Hi
I certainly did not go through all the details, though in another installation the link was working.
After going through the steps, I edited some settings under “B. Set Up Group and Sitewide Forums” and now the group forum is now active. I learned quite a number of new things about forums/group forums.

    Thank you very much!

    Kind regards

    Hi

I appreciate your response. Actually as mentioned in my post on that page, there seems to be something missing in my installation for doing just that, although I already have the recommended buddypress 1.7. I do not have that mentioned interface which has the option to add new members, but might be mistaken & need some little more guidance.

    Kind regards

    @xprt007

    Hi

I am actually looking for the function of the group admin being able to add members. I upgraded to 1.7 as soon as it came & otherwise have among other plugins bbpress, etc.

The problem though is I have gone through the Groups admin area several times, clicking on ALL available links, including one of editing it, beginning with the name, description, etc & all others & I certainly have none showing the interface shown above in the image with among other things “Add new members”.

Under Manage members, one can it seems only kick out or promote existing members, etc.

So I am quite lost. I am using the Custom Community theme & even tried twenty eleven, …

Is there any link in the Group section I have somehow mysteriously overlooked?

Actually, though this is a bit off topic, on the page for creating a group, first stage, I have at the bottom the option whether to inform all members of any changes in the Group via email. I am not sure whether this is default, or is added by a plugin, but it has “no” as default & changing this to “yes” does NOT get saved.

Anyway, I would appreciate any further help

    Kind regards

    @xprt007

    So what can be done?

This is a new site Buddypress based site with Groups and if you make your Group create a private forum, it is not accessible (page not found error), although you see it in the Forums list!
    🙁

    UPDATE:

It seems one cannot edit above post, so I will add that the latest Custom Community theme, I am using is the FREE version.

    @xprt007

The problem seemed to be the Precisio theme. It seems buddypress works only with specific themes or at least the one it suggests during configuration. So I changed to one suggested above. During installation, I changed yet again to the buddypress default theme suggested configuration. Later, I tried to revert to Precisio & all pages created by the buddypress plugin where blank.
At least I now know where the problem lies
    Thank you & regards ;)

    Hi,

I was referring to this https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/setting-up-a-new-installation/buddypress-1-5-installation-wizard/ under Step 1.

I only have Components – Finish & nothing beyond, which should be the “Save & …” button.

I think it’s a not a browser issue as this is the same on different PCs where no other such problem has shown up for WordPress plugins. Also I think it is no server issue, with the PHP 5.3 & 5.2, with all other scripts, including Drupal running.

So running the installation wizard leads to a dead end. :(

I would appreciate any help …

    Kind regards
