Someone mentioned FOAF in this thread http://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/friendship-chain-4-buddypress/, so I thought I’d cross-post it to this interest group.

I had a BuddyPress 1.1.x era plugin that added FOAF to user and group profiles (ignore the readme.txt header!). I was trying to learn FOAF & SIOC & RDFa at the time so I have probably accidentally used some of the wrong taxonomies.

So, with those provisos, here’s the link to my old SVN for the code. I haven’t looked at it in over a year so YMMV:

I so agree with this aim. I’m fine with FOAF. Let me know where I might lend a hand. If we want to model a dev enviro elsewhere to test things out, or a branch or something like that, I’m game.

And sorry I’ve never gotten back on this. My time has been *gulp* crunched!

This group was formed with the goal of “debating the practicalities of implementing Semantic Web and Open Stack protocols in WordPress and BuddyPress.” But, as Paul states in this post, this issue is complex. I believe that we’ve hit a cognitive roadblock. Without some information-overload intervention, I believe that this group will not be effective.

So, I propose that we table all the bigger-picture issues for now and choose a single, highly-focused topic to concentrate our efforts. Perhaps by breaking this up into small, manageable pieces, we will have more success. So, please present your single idea for the topic on which we should focus.

My idea is that we focus on outputting FOAF data.

I, too, was a little taken aback by the exclusivity. However, StatusNet Inc. clearly stated that they wanted to have a small group of people that are actively involved in managing and leading the various projects. This does make sense as it is often too difficult to make substantive progress on sweeping issues when there is a large group of people all pitching in their two cents. I believe it was mentioned that future summits would be open to more participants — but that does not mean it will be an open summit.

As far as the Internet Identity Workshop goes, I believe whereas there are similarities, there are some big differences as this summit targets Open Source projects. It does not include corporations with proprietary platforms.

Interesting. The *exclusivity* of it gives me pause, I must confess. What, I’m curious, is the difference between this event and http://www.internetidentityworkshop.com/ ???

This looks like an interesting, important summit for the Social Web. BuddyPress is mentioned as one of the projects invited to attend. It says that only project committers are invited to this summit. I hope Andy (who lives in Vancouver, BC) is going or has asked JJJ to attend — or at the very least has asked someone else to represent BuddyPress. The one-day summit is in Portland, OR on July 18.

Maybe this is more like side talk, but I’d like to discus using open protocols in a BuddyPress Plugin I’m developing. The plugin will allow people on different websites to connect, friend one another, and communicate.

Some of the things I’m planning on incorporating into this plugin are:
authenticated friendship requests (as opposed to authorized friendship requests)
secure server-to-server communication, using a push method.

I’m designing the authentication to be generic so it can use OpenID, WebID, or whatever else people want to use. For now, it looks like OpenID is going to be the easiest to implement, since there is already a WordPress plugin that handles this.

I guess oAuth is the protocol to use for server-to-server communication.

My plugin is very much a work in progress. Currently I’m setting up basic the basic connection system of sending request, accepting contacts, and listing contacts, as well as the basic foundation for the plugin. I’m looking for people to give advice or give a hand. I want to make sure the server-to-server communication is done in a clean, secure, and open way. Any thoughts, ideas, or advice?
