1.7 can't see buddy press layouts in my theme

    Using buddypress 1.7
    Wordpress 3.5.1
    Theme “Direcory 2.1” from AIT

I’ve installed 1.7 to see if I could get the pages to show. I may have done something wrong, but I’m thinking the theme may be interfering. I can’t see any of the buddpress layouts, just a title and blank.

    Homepage is :http://www.sozocial.com

I’ve put all the buddpress pages under the “social” menu.

I did modify a 1.6 version of buddypress to try and work with this theme, but delted it to wait for 1.7 because I never could get it to display properly.

I have assigned pages to the pages installed by buddypress.

Did I do something wrong? Am I just out of luck to run buddypress? The author of the theme said they haven’t tried using it with Buddypress and I think they are working on other issues right now as it’s a pretty new theme.

I did switch the theme to the buddypress default and the layouts display, makes me think the theme has been custom coded and is interfering… do I have the only theme that won’t work with buddypress, hah!

    Any help would be appreciated!

  • So, for http://sozocial.com/groups/, is it using your theme’s page.php for this page? It should be, could you share the contents of the file please?

Thanks for the reply Paul. Sorry for my ignorance, I’m not schooled in themeing. What file do you want to see? When I look in the editor shouldn’t I be able to see a groups template in that list somewhere? I don’t. And the “groups” page that was created when I installed buddypress doesn’t have any code. What can I send you?

Re-read what Paul wrote, carefully, he says what file.

You will need to copy / paste the contents of the file to pastebin so we can study it.

There clearly are going to be themes that have issues , and given that BP theme compatibility is tested to work pretty well with standard constructed themes that follow WP conventions this is a theme issue but it will help if we can identify what it is about certain themes that throws things out then it might be possible to provide a workaround or at the least some form of documented guidance to working around certain theme problems.

Thanks Hugo, what exact file are you talking about? the page “groups” is assigned to the “groups” in buddypress settings. Do you just want the source from view source in my browser? I dont’ think that’s what you are asking for. Where exactly can I find the file Paul was asking for? Is it in the editor, or do I need to ftp to find it? Is it in the buddypress plugin directory?

BP in theme compat mode uses standard WP files /templates that should exist in your theme, how you locate them depends on your level of access but they should be in the theme root.

The file asked for by Paul is  page.php but if you haven’t got that file BP will look for and use in order single.php, index.php

This isn’t about the pages created in the backend those are just ephemeral pages they need to use an actual template file.

Thank you. There is a page.php in the theme root.

Will upload later to pastebin as access is restricted at work 🙂

I took a look at another template I worked on and the page.php actaully had code in it to build the page. This code looks like it builds the name of the template and then gets the template and renders it. Could that be bypassing buddypress code?

@carlh1 Change to Twenty Twelve theme and check out if BP pages are showing up. If it is, then it’s your theme, and you should contact the theme author.
EDIT – they also have another theme “Rounders” with same issue https://buddypress.org/support/topic/bp-template-pack-step-3-2/

Thanks for the input. I did try it in the default buddypress theme and it works. Its my theme that’s interfering. I did contact them and they are so busy with the new release that it’s not on their radar. I may just install buddypress in another subdirectory and link over to it… just try and make it look similar. the problem their is then I can’t have them share user login’s with both instances.

    thanks.

If you had checked the link @carlh1 had provided you would see when you click on community that the issue is unresolved. An experienced developer may be able to help but if the theme is over-bloated and doesn’t follow standard WordPress template structures then I am afraid you are in for a hefty price-tag even if you hire one. If you have not already checked it out review:
    https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-compatibility-1-7/a-quick-look-at-1-7-theme-compatibility/
See if that helps. Based on your previous topics when you mentioned Non Disclosure Agreements your probably going to have a rough time finding anyone that would be willing to sign that. After all BP, Themes, and all plugins that require WordPress to work fall under GNU/GPL because they are derivative works that uses WordPress’s hooks, actions, filters etc. in order to work with WordPress it has to be. Realistically I doubt your site will be any more groundbreaking than anyone else who has created a WP/BP powered community site so it is right silly to require a NDA! I have seen some very amazing sites created with WP & BP but most of them come from top notch experienced web developers and web designers. Please don’t take this as discouraging or negative just set a realistic goal. Either way good luck!

@bp-help i did see that link and read it but it is really beyond the scope of my personal abilities. The theme is not bloated, but its not a simple twentytwelve theme either. And AIT themes use WpLatte framework.

    @philmay

This site actually isnt groundbreaking, a universal business directory with a social front end and radius based service request system for business lead generation. but thats not the point, I am bound by contract to have anyone who works on the project sign the NDA. The NDA stops people from discussing ONLY details about the site, not about how they made it work, so in essence it wont make any difference to whoever is hired unless they planned on corporate sabotage anyway. As a professional who deals with subcontractors in many different fields I would never hire anybody for any project that “refused” to sign one if needed. An NDA does not effect the GNU/GPL because you can talk about what worked and what didnt, yu are just bound not to disclose BRAND specific information. I have already received quotes varying from $200-$2000 and i am taking my time choosing who i want to do it by evaluating previous work on similar websites. I am still looking for more quotes before i decide on someone, but i have exactly 7 who do not mind signing an NDA.
