This is most definitely a theme issue. Which theme are you using?
I’m using Weaver Pro. I figure it shouldn’t be a big issue but, I know enough about style sheets to get me into trouble. So far this has been the only problem I have had with using BuddyPress with this theme.

Just to confirm this is as @henrywright stated a theme issue so I would advise trying out other themes that is known to work with BP like Twenty Thirteen or Twenty Fourteen then see if the issue still persists then report back.

I have an Activity page that shows up pretty good when you visit it.
But whenever you try to post a comment the entire page shifts to the left and you have to leave the page and come back to reset it.
I am using WordPress 3.9.1 and the latest BuddyPress.
