Add styles to User Links

Maybe somebody can help me.
I am trying to change the User Link that is displayed e.g.in the activities…
I can do this in bp-core.php in the bp_core_get_userlink() function but obviously I do not really want to mess around with the BP Core.
I have found quite a few references to Filters but cant quite grip my way around a way to solve this using a filter.. The activities get written into the Database so I need to grab the string before it gets written there.
Anybody out there that is willing to help me?
