Alternate View to mimic oembed type feature

Just looking to brainstorm a bit… I’d like to build out an alternative interface for specific sections of my site, like a users profile and some custom profile plugins I’ve written.

The goal is to allow users to embed this alternate view from other remote forums/message boards, via a simple iframe or whatever. I was thinking having a dedicated hostname like: ext.sitename.com might allow me to create a ‘filters’ to use different templates for the viewing portions? Does this sound right?

I’m hoping this would drive users to centralize their data on my site and avoid the hassel of copying posts to many forums they may partake in.

Streamlined template: http://expeditionrated.com/members/teebes/tracking/?ext=t

I’m hoping to setup rewrite rules to have use a subdomain approach long term, ie, ext.expeditionrated.com -> url$1?ext=t to avoid the blackbox that is buddypress URLs.

One general question I need some advice on… What’s the best way to have a second set of headers/footers and bundle them with my ‘theme’? Create some functions and call them like any other content?
