Assigning non-buddy press theme page templates not working

Wordpress 3.6
BuddyPress 1.8.1
BuddyPress Activity Plus 1.5

I installed BuddyPress into the the “Avada” theme, and no matter what template I select for the “groups” page, it doesn’t work. For example, selecting the template “100% Width” still has the groups page with a sidebar. Am I missing something? I’m brand new to buddypress, but love it already 🙂
