Autofill for private messaging not working

Running WP 3.3.1 and BP 1.5.3.1 and I’ve recently noticed that the autofill for private messaging does not work, you have to type in the whole user name. I’ve tried typing in first name and also the first few letters of the user name neither one works. Is there a fix for this or am I doing something wrong?

I’m having the exact same problem. Before this solution by @r-a-y worked:

But now it’s not working anymore. Any help would be much appreciated!
