Avatar quality after upload and crop

Hey guys,
After I uploaded a custom avatar, I noticed that Buddypress decreases the image quality by default. Is there and bp hook that we can add in function.php to increase the avatar quality. I found the core code for this bit but as you know, its not a good idea to edit it. Any suggestion
