Best way to integrate with existing site?

I’ve done some research, but can’t find anything Here’s what I’d like to know:

I have an existing WordPress site. I’d like to install Buddypress into a subfolder, i.e. http://www.example.com/community.

1) Do I need a multiuser version of WordPress?
2) I’m doing a fresh WP instal in the sub folder. Can I use the main WP install DB or should it be different? (presuming a different table prefix of course)

Anything else? I did it once with the same DB, diff prefix, but got 404 errors all over…
