BP MEDIA 0.1.9 IS READY FOR ALPHA TESTING

    @francescolaffi

    @francescolaffi and @foxly have finished their latest code merge, bringing Audio, Video, and Embedded Media functionality to BP Media.

    You can download the latest nightly build, located here:

    https://code.google.com/p/buddypress-media/downloads/detail?name=bp-album-2010-08-08.zip

    Some of the key features include:

    – Multimedia support: Local Images and Local Audio Streaming. Video Streaming planned for future versions

    – Embedded Content Support: by default it has two photo embed modules (flickr, smugmug) and several video embed modules (YouTube, Vimeo, Blip.tv, qik, etv…. )

    – Add files by url: if you post a URL that refers to an oEmbed enabled website the media will automatically be embedded. If the URL is a direct link to a media file, the file will be downloaded by the server and locally stored for displaying

    -Media validation: support for different media type means having to recognize and validate each media file format. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to do this in every environment. It currently uses Fileinfo extension (php >= 5.3), shell command ‘file -bi’ (only on unix, shell access needs to be permitted), or a built-in magic numbers table.

    You are welcome to test this version and give your feedback, please remember to test on a fresh install.

    How to give helpful feedback:

    1) Focus the testing on new features: can you embed youtube video? do they have a preview image in the gallery? can you upload and listen mp3? do media title and description represent mp3 tags? if mp3 had an attached image is it used as preview image in the gallery?

    2) see if something that was working in the last nightly has been broken in the code merge

    3) if you find a issue/bug about something that is supposed to working (it was working before or I described it in the intro) open an issue in the issue tracker https://code.google.com/p/buddypress-media/issues/list

    4) if you have some problems with content type detection (media recognition) tell every possible detail about your test enviroment. also look in ‘File Settings’>’Adding Media’>’Media validation’ and tell which detection method are grayed out and which you can select.

    5) known issue: depending on the your browser some features of the audio player (i.e. volume slider) could be cut out, that will be addressed in the release version

    6) known issue: some mp3s with bad headers could not be validated and are rejected, there are many mp3 tools that put random garbage in files, I’ll work on a more loose but still secure validation for mp3. Try with several mp3s and the most of them should be accepted.

    7) edit – known issue: warnings on activation, will be addressed in rewriting of plugin installation/upgrade routines

    Thanks
    Francesco & Foxly

    @francescolaffi – yes, got php5

    Hey guys, haven’t gotten an answer to my question, so here it is again:

    Video embeds aren’t logged as activity. Is this expected behaviour?

    Is there an easy fix to the missing function calls reported earlier in this thread?

    @foxly

    @LPH2005 @thekmen @antonrsa @wpgav @avdeveloper

    We have a new nightly build out that should fix most of the above problems (except keyword tags). Download it at:

    http://code.google.com/p/buddypress-media/downloads/list

    …and report back.

    Also, @wpgav video uploads ARE logged as activity. They are converted to thumbnails added like all other items, and privacy rules will be enforced. Please experiment with the activity stream to learn how it works.

    Thanks!

    I am getting an error about the size being exceeded and cannot easily find the place to change the maximum size allowed.

    Try “Dashboard” > “Options” > “Max upload file size” (near the bottom of the page).
    If that doesn’t do it, you may have to edit your php.ini file. Look for max_file_size and max_post_size.

    Thank you, @pcwriter. Glad you are here. Except that I don’t have those options unless I enable multi-site. After enabling multi-site I can get to Dashboard -> Options.

    I installed latest version (Nightly build for 2010-08-28), but when I try to create an album appears following message:

    Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/dev.businessinfashion.com/htdocs/buddytest2/wp-content/plugins/bp-album/includes/media-modules/media-modules-loader.php:21) in /home/dev.businessinfashion.com/htdocs/buddytest2/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 890

    Any ideas?

    Thanks a lot!

    can anyone tell me if this supports Group Albums. I know this was mentioned in the past, did it make it in?

    I could be wrong but I believe it’s already in the nightly build.

    Check it out here:

    *Edit: I’m wrong, group albums are not available yet. Read foxly’s post here:

    Just a tiny thing for anyone who has tried this yet.

    I need a plugin that allows my members to upload just 3 photos to their profile that can be viewed from a tab on their profile page? Perhaps being able to add just 1 video and 1 mp3 also.

    Can this plugin be that specific to only allow x number of files to be uploaded and can these things be seen from a person’s profile?

    Thanks so much!

    Actually, re-read foxly’s post because I think the original version scared some people …now new and improved with emoticons.

    In a nutshell …yes, we’re going to add group albums but no, they’re not in the plugin yet.

    Because of the specific functionality group albums require, we can’t start working on them until later in the build process. It would be kind of like trying to build floor #5 of an office tower before building floors 1 through 4. :)

    I can’t give you a specific timeframe for when the group albums feature will be complete, but if you take a look at the awesome progress we’ve made during the past six months, it will probably be a lot sooner than you’d think.

    Wow. That’s actually a really good idea, and it’s like 15 minutes work to code.

    Please post this as a feature request on our issue tracker, here:

    http://code.google.com/p/buddypress-media/issues/list

    I’ll add that to the next nightly build.

    Yup. Definitely getting closer to out alpha release dates… :-)

    ^F^

    Just curious, currently there is a warning on the admin control panel not to use the plug in on live sites as media will be lost when the final version comes out. When this actually goes into alpha would be be out of danger on losing media? And what’s the time estimate?

    We really need this plug in and it has been very stable on our site since installing it (we experienced more bugs on BP Album+ then we do on BP Media). We are about to go live. I’m ready to take a calculated risk and go out with it but not if our users’ media would be endangered by it.

    Follow our project calendar: http://bit.ly/aUn5dZ

    When we reach the “Data Model Freeze” we will stop making changes to the DB table structure, and you will probably will not lose any data.

    Thanks!
