Broken avatar images for non-Gravatar users

Hi, I’m trying to get the default “mystery man” avatar to display for users who don’t have a Gravatar or custom avatar set up yet, but it’s showing a broken image. When I have “Mystery Man” selected in my Discussion / Default Avatar settings, Gravatars are displaying correctly for users who have one set up, custom avatars are displaying correctly for users who have uploaded one directly to their BP profiles, but broken images are displaying for those who have done neither.

HOWEVER, if I select either Blank, Gravatar logo, or any of the “(Generated)” avatars in the Default Avatar settings, those will display correctly. So, this only appears to be breaking with the local mystery man avatar.

Here’s the image source URL for one of the broken ones (note, this looks practically identical for users who have either Gravatars or custom avatars, just the long string of numbers is different):

    http://gravatar.com/avatar/f0ff7a55996c0a280660ed1db3ea686b?d=/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/images/mystery-man.jpg&s=50&r=G

I’ve confirmed that the “mystery-man.jpg” file is right where the file path suggests, starting from “/wp-content…”

Since this is working for Gravatar users, custom BP avatar users, but not for non-Gravatar users, I’m stumped as to where to begin to debug. Any suggestions?

Using WP 3.5.2 and BP 1.8.
