Buddypress 9.1 Upgrade Problem

I upgraded to wordpress 3.8.1 and buddypress 9.1. and realized that I could not access my webite via the dashboard. I kept getting the following message:
“The page isn’t redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.”
After much agonizing, I realized that deactivating buddypress 9.1 allows my website to load from my dashboard. But then removing buddypress turns my website primarily into a wordpress site and not a buddypress site. How can fix this problem? Is wordpress 3.8.1 incompartible with buddypress 9.1?
