Buddypress activity for self and friends only

    @siloni

    Hi,
    I want to show the activity of friends and self on the buddypress activity page. Currently there are different tabs for sitewide, friends, favorites etc. But on the friends page, we can see only the updates from friends and not my own activity.
    In the buddypress codex, its mentioned that, we can filter the activity by assing just-me or friends to the scope variable. Is it possible to assign both the values to scope, so that I can see activity from my friends along with my own activity.
    Also, if there is any other way of doing this, please let me know.

    Regards,
    Siloni

    Hi Siloni,

    I’m using Friends-Only Activity Stream plugin from WPMU
    and modified the line 38-39 from:
    `if ( $bp->loggedin_user->id == $potential_friend_id )
    return false;`
    to:
    `if ( $bp->loggedin_user->id == $potential_friend_id )
    return true;`

    But this will modify your All Members activity stream into You and Your Friends only activity, My Friends activity will remain untouched.

    I’m using WP 3.5.1 and BP 1.6.5

    Regards,
    Richoz

    It works great! I wish the author would update it to reflect the change but I guess nothing worthwhile comes too easy! :-)

    @siloni For the convenience of everyone I took the changes @richoz provided and packaged a plugin for the community to use. All credit goes to Rich Fuller for his great tutorial.

    @hnla would it be out of line for me to release this plugin to the repository even though I give all credit to the original code author? It is all Rich Fullers work with the slight mod mentioned above. I am not a great coder but I would like to share the knowledge I have learned from others to make their bp experience even better. What is your thoughts on this and would it be a good contribution to the repository? Thank you sir!

    @bphelp the author of the plugin and article referred in the link above is @pollyplummer
    I would submit the patch to her first and ask whether she would be maintaining the plugin among others.

    @bphelp As @mercime says the correct approach in a case like this is submitting a patch to the plugin author for consideration not releasing  a virtual duplicate plugin into the repo, unless it was clear the plugin wasn’t maintained and one sought  all possible acknowledgement and agreement from the original author that you would take over and maintain the plugin.

    However I’m confused as to the differences or at least what is Rich Fullers code/plugin and what is pollyplummers

    @hnla rich! was cool with it per his comment in that WPMU.org article by pollyplummer when she released the plugin

    @bphelp @hnla @mercime  Yes, the plugin I made was based on Rich Fuller’s code. It’s ancients old – I’d be surprised if it still works! ;)  But I never put it in the repo. If @bphelp wants to put it in the repo, feel free – just know that you’ll get lots of emails, etc for support. ;)

    @pollyplummer @hnlna @mercime So it looks like @pollyplummer has given the okay to put it in the repo. Now the question stands is how do I properly acknowledge pollyplummer and rich fuller as the authors? I don’t think they want to maintain it anymore so do I just list them as contributors in the readme.txt or as the author in the comments section or both? Thanks everyone!

    @pollyplummer Maybe I should just leave the plugin here:

    https://github.com/bphelp/activity-privacy-component

    It gives you and Rich full acknowledgement for the plugin. If this is okay with you then can you point the link:

    http://wpmu.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/buddypress-friends-only-activity-stream.zip

    to this instead:

    https://github.com/bphelp/activity-privacy-component/archive/master.zip

    To help avoid confusion? Thank you! :-)

    Or you could just download it replace it with the one on that server. Either way it is still a decent plugin that is useful for novices such as myself. Thanks for your contribution!

    Unfortunately, it looks like the plugin for displaying only friends and self in the activity stream was abandoned and now refers people to use the “superior” buddypress privacy plugin instead.

    The problem is that the buddypress privacy plugin doesn’t really accomplish the same thing. It only allows users to set privacy when posting, not when viewing. That means that if some random person decides to post their update to everyone then it shows up in my activity stream even if I am not friends with them and have zero interest in seeing what this random person that I’ve never interacted with is up to.
