There was a plugin for BP 1.5.1 http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-activity-stream-hashtags/ Not tested if it works for BP 1.6.1

But it’s too buggy for the current BuddyPress. (This is what I would saying)
I want only ask if the developers are making a remake of the plugin you said.
