Child theme is broken on my Mac, OK on server

Hello, new BP user here. I followed the directions for creating a new child theme in the BuddyPress codex, but I’m having a problem with it. Working on my Mac (using MAMP), I am getting the message that the theme is broken. “Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.” I copied it to my ISP, and it works there, so I know I didn’t mess up the template or the paths. Have others had this problem?

I have created WordPress themes like this and not had this problem, it’s only happening with BP child themes. Seems like a bug. Any suggestions? I’m going to have a hard time building my stylesheet if I can’t work locally.
