Comments not showing…

Just trying to see if I am missing anything – uploaded fresh copy of BP, and have a sample post. The comments block isn’t showing below the post, even though there is a comment on the post.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Just bumping this – not sure why a clean install wouldn’t show comments – anyone else have this issue?

Sorry Brian, I am not sure what you mean exactly. You mean the comment not showing in sitewide feed or what exactly? You mean in the buddypress-home theme?

On the main site, I made a post. I click on that post, and the entire comment block is not showing. Meaning you can’t see the comments that have been made on the post. Even if go to the Blog link in the main navigation, it shows the post with the comments icon and the 2 by it, so the comments exist… but just don’t show on the single page.

Moreover, even on the post page the place to enter a comment isn’t even there (meaning the comment form) I was only able to make the second comment by replying to the default comment within my dashboard. I have checked to ensure that the <?php comments_template(); ?> call is in the single.php file – but not showing on each post.

Are you using the trunk, or RC-1?

I just did a clean install with latest SVN and can’t replicate this…hmm.

Trent & Andy – just emailed you both the domain I’m testing this on. You can click on the comments in the recent comments widget, and you’ll see it takes you to the single page without comments. Just thinking I am missing an enable/disable comments option in the BuddyPress dashboard or something…

I have an email coming your way once gmail starts working. Check out your permalinks structure though as it doesn’t seem to be the same as a normal install though…

    Trent

Maybe not standard URL’s from SEO plugin might break BP. Have to ask Andy if that is the case.

    This is an easy one.

@bmg1227, are you using the included theme, or a custom one?

Do me a favor and anywhere in your index.php file in your theme, put <?php echo "Hello there!" ?>

Then access your post. If you see “Hello There” then my theory is correct, and your single.php file isn’t being accessed.

I think what’s happening is that your functions.php file isn’t divvying out the template file that it should be. Take the functions.php file from the stock BuddyPress Home theme, and copy it into whatever theme you’re using.

    Tada!

It’s definitely a permalink issue, as when I set it to %postname%.htm like I normally do on my standard WP installs, the comments don’t show – but when I set it to the default permalinks, the comments show.

Thanks for the help, I’ll figure out a way to get pretty permalinks to work and still show comments… it looks like any custom permalinks have issues showing comments.

Oh yes, that is true, and that’s something I’ve posted here a few weeks ago actually. I’m fairly certain I trac’ed it, but maybe I should double check.

    Looks like no.. :X

I’ll add it in there now. Shucks…

Don’t see it, I’m adding it in there now. Darn.

I was so sure I had your issue nailed to. My apologies. I ran into the exact same problem myself a few weeks back so I was pretty sure I had it fixed. It was about that same time I noticed the permalink issue also, so they worked hand-in-hand against me. Ha!

Thanks, the weird thing is that the month and name permalink structure of /%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/ will show the comments, but when you strip that down to /%postname%/ it won’t show them.

Same with “/%category%/” which is how I got caught up myself. I usually did “/%category%/%postname%/” and was banging my head against it for 2 days.

Andy said he will look at this for you, but I would imagine that the way the URL’s are handled wasn’t something that was part of the original functionality and now it is time to look at it :)

I would say so, as most people who use WP and WPMU that use permalinks a certain way would like to continue to. Also consider the fact that people using MU with the permalinks as I had mentioned are using them successfully, which means if they install BP onto their MU version, it will create an issue with all of the posts they have.

Wonderful that I came across this. I could not figure out why my comments were not working. I was using /%category%/ for my permalink structure.

If anyone figures out how to get it working, I would love to know.

    Thanks!

I was able to get /%category%/%postname%/ to work with comments, however, when you navigate to the post, it appears as if a closing </div> tag is coming from somewhere throwing the layout off. Any ideas?
