Customize Activity Email Notifications

How do I customize the message content in the activity email notifications?
The only way I currently know is to edit the core file, bp-activity-notifications.php…which is a no-no.
Could the filter, ‘bp_activity_new_comment_notification_message’, help? How would I set it up, haven’t been able to figure it out.
