@sushkov BuddyPress ScholarPress Courseware is in use now. A first report:

Using this tool requires explanation. The first students who joined the course ignored the lectures and failed. So I made some changes:

    – The (courseware-)group now starts on sub-nav “course description” instead of “home”.
    – In “course description” I did a lot of explanation and integrated an image-guided navigation out of the text.
    – In “course description” sidebar I added a button linking to download the lecture (PDF).
    – Now the original lecture only contains best wishes for success.

I optimistically looks to the future and will continue to report our experience….

    @sushkov

    Thanks a lot.
Courseware lacks a lot of UI/UX details. Feedback like this is always welcome!

    Hi chaoti,

in my point of view the usability of coursewa.re is the main issue – we try to deal with I am still searching for a developer to do the customizations….

    best wishes

    Thx @husky2000 :)

@sushkov and @all: Today the next three students logged in to the group. They did some assignments without any problem. It seems we are on the right way…

All in all there are near 1.800 potential course participants. With up to 500 is to be expected in this course. It is open since yesterday morning. Deadline is the 20th April. It’s a great trial. I’m still waiting to see all the students in this course. The suspense is killing me…

As I said elsewhere: It would be great if one could export the results as CSV and also if one (students and teachers) could look at the completed assignment…. Argh.. sometimes I wish with all my heart that I were a developer…

Best wishes to all courseware-friends. I will continue to report our experience…

@sushkov and @all: This weekend some students worked at their assignments. Two of them gave the right answers in a textfield, but they did some spelling mistakes. Spelling mistakes aren’t important to pass our course. Because this was marked as mistake, the students asked me to correct it. This is not possible. Either we give manually more points or we cancel the complete task to allow doing it once more. Both is a solution. ;)

    What I miss:

I miss a link from gradebook back to the work of a single student. With such a function it would be easier to control why a student did badly. Another point: At courseware home one can see the last given answers. Nowhere one can see a list of all given answers. With such a list it would not be necessary to jump back and forth between personal messages/emails and courseware. In addition this list could be used as documentation of the entire process.

Today’s final remarks: It works!

I will continue to report our experience…

@sushkov Today I waste a lot of time to figure out what’s going on: I got a lot of messages because many students were busy. I went to assignments to look at the gradebook and could see only 8 out of 59 students… panic sets in …. 8O

What happened? Normally one can join a public group by posting something into it. If a new courseware student comes into group only to do an assignment without writing anything else and without joining by button he’ll not become a group member. And if the student is no group member the teacher can’t see him in the gradebook.

A quick help for me was the plugin BuddyPress Auto Group Join. We can see all done assignments, but some students who not wish to visit this course must leave the course manually now… ;)

Today I found the list of answers… :) It seems to be that I am not deeply familiar with courseware. ;)

I like that the assignments will now be evaluated automatically. Nevertheless, the teacher must have a look at each and sometimes there are to do some changes. Especially the textfields are error-prone: A space too much and it will be considered as a mistake.

The message that the work has been evaluated is sent before the teacher could make his changes. Further I can’t change the public comment. This is need of improvement. Or am I just too stupid to do so?

An addition to my comment from yesterday:

You remember: A quick help for me was the plugin BuddyPress Auto Group Join… One student told me now that he can see a lot of the introductory text of the first assignment (it is a long one), but not the button “Take the assignment quiz now”. After he klicked the button “Join Group” manually he could see all. I tried it by myself and can confirm this now. I want to know how the students, the results of yesterday I could not see, managed it to answer the questions …

I will continue to report our experience…

Yeah, students should be part of the group to be able to access everything and take quizzes.
Messages are sent automatically, but those require assistance for sure!

    Thanks.

    Hello @sushkov and @all

Checking the students work, I always stumble back on the consecutive numbering of the wrong answers. Instead of that it would be nice if the original numbering of the tasks would be taken. So it is a bit confusing.

You remember: Spelling mistakes are not important on our course. When I changed the grade because of spelling mistakes, the students ask me all the time why it is still shown as a mistake to them. One woman needled me especially. To get her quiet I tried to do the changes as desired… to the database. Hahaha, finally a good joke: In database all looked fine. In her view the whole work had gone. No work, no discussion…

Apart from that everything is still okay. :)

I will continue to report our experience…

@sushkov With so many students, the activity streams quickly become confusing. The normal interaction in other buddypress areas will be significantly disturbed. Can I somehow disable that every courseware-answer is recorded in all activity streams?

Ok… looking for quick help: Now I commented out function activity_for_response in activity.class.php and deleted all response_add entries in database.

    Hello @sushkov and @all

Today, I was asked when the first work had been submitted. A question that I could not answer spontaneously. In the response list behind each answer the date of opening of the course is shown, but not the date on which the responses were submitted…

I will continue to report our experience…

    @sushkov

Yeah, basically the responses can not be modified right now.
Though you can always access that data if you enable debug in the WordPress config file.
Grading results should be in a post metadata field.

Regadring activity stream, that should not be available if responses are set to private. Still sounds more like a BuddyPress issue, not Courseware (I mean the control over what should be streaming).

How come? It should be there:

    Hello @sushkov and @all

Over all we got 230 answers. At the end of our course I miss the possibility to deny the release of further responses, without denying access to the full course. The students shall continue to see their answers and results …

Second part of this course starts in autumn. I will continue to report our experience…

Now we are using Courseware with WP 3.4.1, BP 1.5.6 and 0.9.6. Changing groups.class.php – around line 248 (only put a slash before courseware”>'; <- thx @gornycreative :) ) it works fine.

The next 8 weeks we’ll do some little summer-workshops… ;)

@starryhost Hi Jack, I am sorry. It’s a closed community. So you cannot see Courseware in action. Have a look at http://dialogpartnerinnen.de/
