Finding the right domain host for buddy press

  • Hello everyone.

I registered my domain name under fatcow.com and then installed wordpress to my site, only to find out later that their servers do not support social networking based platform. I canceled my account. Where should i get my new domain name ? Any recommendations ?

If it’s a cheap shared host it may fail if membership is high. I use media temple shared and for small networks I haven’t had a problem. If you have significant traffic you should look into dedicated hosting.

The main difference of cheap hosting to media temple that i’ve experienced is they don’t shut your site down for high server loads they just add onto your bill. I had a test BP site on a cheap shared host and about 300 people tried to log in at the same time it tipped the server and they shut down the site for 3 days.

Thank you for prompt response. So do you have any recommendations of where to find a dedicated host ?

i’m sure others will chime in here to suggest a certain hosting. I use media temple but there are many others that are just as good.

    I highly recommend Laughingsquid.

They are one of the WordPress recommended hosts, https://wordpress.org/hosting/
and I think they are great.

Tiger Technologies is a fantastic hosting company.

$7 per month just cannot be beat – and an even better price if you pay for a full year in advance. The guys there constantly monitor my site and help out with changes.

We use RackSpaceCloud which can be pricy, but they’re geared towards dramatic scalability. http://www.rackspacecloud.com/

Thank you all guys for your help.

Been looking into rackspace Cloud Sites. Unfortunately, they don’t support wildcards & subdomains.

I use Bluehost (shared) but, as they domain-map addon domains (thus their “Unlimited domains” hype ;-) ) they don’t support wildcards or subdomains either. They do however have a very affordable dedicated server package if you’re anticipating high traffic and heavy server loads… which is what we all aspire too, I think :-)
