Friends and friend request pages not found

    @beetoobee

    Hi

I am running BP 1.7.1 and WP 3.5.1 have a theme (ProjectTheme by sitemile) with a child theme (Bounce by ghostpool). I had a developer help me set up this. I am not a developer and am a steep learning curve due to a small budget (read: can’t afford a developer at this point).

My problem is that no matter what theme I run I can make friend requests and receive both mail and WP toolbar notifications that I have a friend request, but when I try to accept I get 404 error. I have no way of accepting outside of the toobar, i.e. no page.

I have tried to figure out how to create a friends page and requests page, but it is beyond my skills. When I look on the FTP I can see that all the .php templates are there. When I look at page attributes and try to choose a template from the drop down I get the following options (I have put what I believe to be the controlling component in brackets): Default (bounce), Blank page (bounce theme), BuddyPress activity directory (BP), Login (WP), Page list (?) and project_special_page (project theme).

Irrespective of which theme I choose (including BP theme) I can not get friends or request pages to work.

How do I fix it? Do I need to create friends and request pages or should they generate automatically? Why are there .php templates, but they don’t show up in the page attributes template list and if I wanted them to show up there how do I do that?

I realise that these are not necessarily easy questions to answer in a post, but if someone can point me in the right direction via documentation or similar, I would appreciate it.

    Regards
    Jason

I’m having this problem too. Must not be a common issue.

@dorfman No, the issue is not a common one at all.
    - Go to Settings > BuddyPress > Components and make sure that the Friend Connections component is enabled.
    - Change to Twenty Twelve or the BP Default theme.
    - If those are still missing, then re-upload BuddyPress manually e.g. s/FTP.

I deactivated Extended Profiles and that fixed the problem.

Same here, although I don’t get a 404 but a “no pending friendship” message – disabling Extended Profiles shows me the list. Am I doing something wrong? I’m using BuddyBoss + a child theme, FWIW.

The best way to troubleshoot this issue, is to disable all of the plugins, then turn on buddypress, then secondly turn on buddypress extended profiles.

If just bp and bp extended work fine, then the problem is another plugin is not playing nice with buddypress or bp extended.

You can then just turn one plugin on at a time until the error occurs. Once you find the faulty plugin, then you can isolate exactly which plugins are not playing nice with buddypress(or vice versa)

The only thing you can do after that, is figure out where the conflict is. Doing that, requires programming knowledge.

Forgot to add, a theme could also be causing a conflict. So if just bp and bp_x don’t play nice with everything else disabled, then try a default theme (default buddypress or wp 2012 for example)

Disabling the plugin Invite Anyone did the trick, which is worrysome since I love that functionality.. But now at least I can see my pending requests again, without having to disable parts of BP itself.

Darn, the problem still exists – disabling Invite Anyone no longer solves it :/ Can’t find out why though. I get correct numeric indicators (“1 Friends”) in the menus but “no pending…” in page. Guess I’ll go bug hunting elsewhere then..

OK, I think I have narrowed it down to the Profile sync checkbox – checking this (thus disabling WP-BP sync) shows me the friend request list again. Without having to disable Extended Profiles in BP that is.

Now, how do I get back that sync again.. :/

I’ve created a ticket here now, for those with similar issues like me: https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/5372
