Group Forums – Reply to Topic Replies

I’ve recently stood up a BuddyPress site and it is working great – the only problem I have is that you can’t see to reply to group forum topic replies. So if I start a topic in a group forum and others reply, there is no way to reply to one of the specific replies. Am I missing something – or is this feature added somewhere? Maybe a plugin that I can’t seem to find? Would love it if this could be added to the core – seems like it is a no-brainer.

Do you mean threaded comments to forum replies just like in Activity Streams (wall/wire) and Blog Post Comments? If so, then there is none by default as forums by nature are flat discussions where you refer to what you’re replying to by @ mention and/or quoting post/sentence/phrase which you are replying to in your post.

There’s a plugin for threaded replies which you could use for Sitewide Forums aka bbPress plugin 2.+ https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress-threaded-replies/ but none that I recall made specifically for Group Forums.

I would also like to see threaded comments added to group forums…

In addition, it would also be fabulous if Forum topics could also be setup to be organized by category. Or better yet, as in some of the nicer online wiki’s the forum directory being able to be edited by the admin so that items in the forum directory and be placed in grouplets or in any order other than first come last posted.

I’d like this on the doc’s plugin as well, but then that’s a plugin!

There is also a minor bug in the Mute – Follow option when the bp – editor plugin is added forums, which results in the follow-mute button being almost completely obscured at the bottom where new comments are to be started.

Group forums will be scripted to use the Sitewide Forums pretty soon, so your wish will come true.

Organizing Forum topics is via bbPress plugin (aka Sitewide Forums). For this and for the minor bug in the Mute – please post at be bbPress.org forums.

Thanks for the reply. I’m having trouble figuring out how to post in anything in the bbPress forum as there is no add new topic option…

@energynet Go to https://bbpress.org/forums/ and log in using same username and password used here. Click on “Add New” link right after “Topics” title on that page.

My clients are currently also interested in threaded replies in the Group Forums. Any luck in finding a solution @Matt and @energynet?

btw. @mercime Do you know when the Group Forums are going to be scripted to use the Sitewide Forums from bbPress?

    music to my ears!.
But even then there are few hitchs.

Can we start sub forums or categories within a group forum?
what about buddypress group forum specific plugins? Will they become incompatible?

You can use bbPress 2.1+ today with BuddyPress 1.6+. It works great for new sites, but if you’ve got existing group forum content you’d need to migrate, I’d hold off until bbPress 2.2.

I don’t know about the other details; I know JJJ spoke about them, but not sure what’s decided. I imagine any new features would be released incrementally.

BP group forum specific plugins will become incompatible, yes.
