Are you logged in when you click on the link? If you try to visit /register/ while logged in, you will get redirected in the way you describe.
Have you enabled user registrations? On regular WP, Dashboard > Settings > General; on MS, Dashboard > Super Admin > Options. Make sure that account creation is enabled.
If you are still having problems, deactivate Invite Anyone and see whether you are able to access /register.

thanks for the reply. it is very weird. everything is alright in the settings. people can register as contributors. i get the notification i have group invites here: http://psn.cezarneaga.eu/members/cezar/groups/invites/?n=1 but the link sends me to http://psn.cezarneaga.eu/groups/

This sounds like a problem with the way BP is sending invitations. Have you tried with Invite Anyone turned off?
funny. even with the plugin deactivated i still get redirected back to general groups. weird.
i figured where the problem comes from. i am using group hierarchy and this causes invites not to work.
