    @blastblast

    Hi, I’m looking to launch a buddypress site though I have quite few technical knowledge regarding programming and such. I am looking to learn however I have been stuck on the initial step of picking a host.

    I am undecided between Bluehost, HostGator (both around $10/month) and Media Temple ($20/month)
    – I’m not sure which to pick because I can’t quite scale and compare the advantage of each. For example if my site happens to grow to 1000 user, would Bluehost/HostGator be able toe handle it? 10,000 users? And such?

    Any input would be highly appreciated.
    thanks

    sounds like you need a developer or coder to help you, either post here on the job board or try go to a freelance site like odesk, freelancer, etc. to find someone to help you

    to answer your Q: yes, with proper optimization and caching, a WP+BP site can grow to a huge base on shared hosting, it is possible

    but aren’t you putting the cart before the horse? I mean, when you grow to that size you can then re-evaluate your hosting options and move, if necessary to a better one

    for the best hosting options, check out webhostingtalk forums and either look for the hosting offers or put up your own needs and get bids from hosts

    with the help of a developer you can also go with digitalocean which is a really good up and coming host

    either I’m “moving too fast” or posting a “duplicate message” or it won’t tell me anything, no error messages but it won’t post my msg!

    very very frustrating, never had this issue with the forum, no idea WTF is going on had to break my msg into sections for it to post!

    asynaptic, thank for your input.

    And Yes, I suppose I am putting the cart before the horse a bit. However, like I said I am not as well versed with codes or technical terminologies so I would ideally like to not switch host entirely but rather upgrade to a better plan within the same host.

    @blastblast the number of users isn’t really the issue – it’s what they do on your site. For example, if your site serves video then users will use lots of bandwidth. You will probably need a good amount of storage space too. If you simply allow your users to upload an avatar and create a profile page then this won’t be bandwidth intensive and you won’t need much storage space – even if you have 1,000 users sign up.

    I think as @synaptic said, it is important to look for a host that suits your current needs and then keep in mind you might need to upgrade if your site begins to scale.

    I’ve recently moved a site from WP Engine to Dreamhost’s new “DreamPress” service, and so far so good.
