How do mentions work

I’ve messed around with @mentions on testbp.org, but they are not exactly what I’m looking for. They act more like private messages I’m looking more for something like how Facebook does it. I want to pull someone into a thread, vs send them a private message. Is this possible?

@mentions work the way you intended them to; they leave a notification in the WP Toolbar for the user and concurrently notifies the user via email.

If you want something more immediate and Facebook-like, use Brajesh Singh’s Live Notification plugin:
