how to add custom post_type to activity stream?

I managed to combine a few different plugins together in order to create a custom post_type complete with taxonomies and custom fields specific to the post_type.
That part works perfectly for what it is so far, and I can view the archive/single pages for the post_type.
Where I am really getting stuck is figuring out how to include those post’s in the activity stream.
I would have guessed that by using a post_type that bp would automatically pick them up and add them to the stream, as they are technically posts, but it’s not happening. I am totally out of ideas on this one.
The idea being that when pastor adds a sermon ‘post_type’ that it should show up and notify everyone just like regular posts do.
anyhow have any ideas how to do this?
