How to highlight users error in registration

Im using bp 1.6.2 and wp 3.5 and i was setting up a different username to make sure everything was working correctly. When i made a mistake on the sign up, it was hard to figure out where the error came from.
I was wondering what code would i need to implement to highlight the error in red when a user mess up on a field?
