It seems that http://premium.wpmudev.org/ has tons of powerful plugins and themes, but its a bit pricey. I just want to make sure that it’s a legitamate website that has real forum high end support.

    Can anyone comment on this?

    Thanks!

Along these lines, do people seam to prefer wpmudev over buddydev?

Can’t really compare the two ‘cuz they have completely different products. For instance, WPMUdev is geared mainly toward WordPress with BP as an afterthought, while BuddyDev caters pretty much exclusively to users of BP.

For WPMUdev, do you have to pay a monthly subscription? It seems kind of pricey.

I am also assuming you can use both WPMUdev and Buddydev, as they just provide plugins?

    Thanks

Yes, WPMUDev requires a monthly subscription and like pcwriter said they don’t really focus on BuddyPress.

WPMUDev is pricey; I would go with BuddyDev if you really need some form of support. However keep in mind that BuddyDev is only maintained by one person, so you might want to consider that as well.

It seems as though WPMUDev has some very powerful plugins and support. They do have many BP plugins, and they say that they can build any sort of plugin by request. Has anyone tried this / know if it works?

Any BP developer can build you a plugin. I think wpmudedv and buddydev are probably best for already existing plugins. It’s up to you to decide if you think the money for value ratio for a custom made plugin is worth it. Post your requirements here on the job board and see what kind of answers you get.

I know it probably depends on the circumstances, but do developers create plugins for free, or must they cost money to be built?

Let me know if I should specify the actual plugin I want to be built…

    Thanks!

I think your last question is moot. Developers will very often create plugins and offer them free under GPL license. Just take a look at the WP plugin repo where you’ll find over 13,000 free plugins: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

But anytime you request something be created or custom-built, it’s best to offer some form of compensation; whether you want some coding done, or a deck built in your backyard :-)
