Legality of Translating Themes and Plugins

    Hi, can I legally change an entire Buddypress (premium) theme into another language? Does owning the regular license give me this right?

    Also, would this be allowed for Buddypress plugins? Or should I contact each respective developer before proceeding?

    Yes, WordPress and BuddyPress is under GPL license and that grants a user to take and modify and redistribute. When a theme or plugin is created and utilizes WP or BP it too must be under GPL license. Some theme graphics may not fall under GPL but any code that access WP or BP including language in a template file is open to be changed by a user.

    If you purchased that theme, there’s nothing wrong about translating the theme for your own use. But if you plan to sell/distribute (especially distribute) that theme, better check the license of that specific premium theme.

    If you want to help with the translation of any plugin, just send the translation file to the plugin developer who usually give credits to all translators.
